Default Surface Grinder Table Feed - A Swiss Variation

Last Saturday, while in Melbourne, I had the pleasure of meeting up with Stuart, Greg, Joe, Mike Garwood and Phil Fehring at Greg's place. Prior to the rendezvous at Greg's, Stu had taken me to his place and I realised that the 2 hours I spent there wasn't enough. I'd need two days to just scratch the surface of his wondrous collection.

At Greg's, I saw the delightful Brown and Sharpe surface grinder that Greg and Mike had bought. The grinder, maybe 1940's, does not have automatic table traverse. We had taked about a YouTube clip where a bloke had rigged up a crank to an electric motor to provide an auto traversing action. I mentioned to Greg to simple setup used by a Swiss machine maker on their grinder. I had posted photos but finding them would be the challenge. Well I found them.

Thanks Bob! Those Dubied Brothers made a nifty grinder. Work on the B & S continues apace: the motor has been re-installed, as has the spindle housing and two idler pulleys. I think Phil F may get an unwelcome visit this week from me, tensioner pulley and bearings in hand.

This machine has been a real eye-opener, but a very entertaining project. I have decided to do some scraping on it this week as unreplaced oilers caused some oil starvation to the ways and wear is evident.*

*built in an era when machines were maintained, and parts common, it has button oilers with spring loaded one way balls. The oilers are below the oil reservoirs in the table, so without the sprung ball the oil cannot get up to the reservoir. Of course three out of four oilers were broken. There is still some evidence of scraping marks on the ways, so I'm hoping for an easy one.
