    Default sutton quality

got myself a sutton 105mm hole saw the other day and just used it today for a job im doing, reason i got Sutton is because the last one i had (yellow and starts with S and made in the USA) went blunt prematurely, either that or its rubbish, only used it to cut a hole in a mates shed roof for a flue and cut 3 x 3mm and 3 x 5mm and it was caput!, used the sutton today and cut 3 x 10mm, 3 x 3mm and its still as sharp as when it came out the box. it cost $32 plus delivery (slightly more expencive then the other brand but only by a dollar or two) worth every penny.

I would of thought .5mm would of been ok for a holesaw, what is the tollerance normally.

I would have thought .5 mm was excellent. I don't think holesaws could ever be described as a precision cutting tool!

I have found that when cutting thin material it helps if you pre-drill the pilot hole with a standard drill bit and then replace the the pilot drill in the saw with a piece of plain rod (I use hardened silver steel), it stops the tendency of the pilot drill to cut sideways, which in turn lets the holesaw cut oversize or non-round.

2" block of 6010 Alloy which I had wanted (still do) the centre out of it gave a hole size 1mm large than required. Not to worry obviously since Suttons have gone to China like everyone else quality control has gone out the window. Its not the first time I have read of other recent Suttons gear also going wrong.

I still prefer Suttons over anything else.

My personal Sutton story is ordering in a set of M8 1.0 pitch taps. Had to wait 3 days, got them home only to find that the taper tap was M8 1.25. Five phone calls and over 4 weeks later I received a replacement. I wonder if it was a 1off or a 1000off lol. I also bought a set of drills that can with odd length drills.

wheelinround, You need a hole bored in something?

    Hi Ray,

They still make most of their product in Melbourne, I seem to remember that some stuff comes from China, Frost branded product I think is Chinese.

most sutton gear is still made here (like RayG mentioned earlier), only ever had one problem with a sutton tool and that was a VA 6mm gun tap which snapped the first time i used it, mind you it was kinda my own fault ( tapping tool steel for a rota broach cutter holder).

in the last two days i have cut with my sutton 105mm hole saw 3 x 10mm, 3 X 3mm and today 3 X 8mm, all mild steel, never the less the brand i was using in the past wouldn't have been able to do as many cuts on lighter steel. used heaps of cutting oil (RTD) and i recon its still good for just as many cuts if not more.

as for the hole saw not giving a spot on cut, i use the 105mm for a 100mm plug , im not after the hole as much as the plug which when ive cut what i need i bolt them together then tac them then spin them up to size on the lathe. Why don't i jusy oxy cut them out?, because after i cut them with the oxy i have to run them over the linishing belt to remove the mill scale and slag, taking into account the cost of linishing belts and oxy i figure im better off hole sawing them out, get RTD for nothing so i use like i get it for free.

one more thing, whats with dual pitch hole saws? used one recently, absolute crap!
