    G'Day ,
    Recently I was boring some aluminium bushes and generating long ribbons of swarf when the end of one entered a ventilation slot on the end of the motor, it pulled in about 300mm before breaking off, no damage done (except to an old blokes bowel control) to prevent a repeat I pilfered a 6" stainless steel skimmer from the kitchen cut the handle off and mounted it over the vent slots with 3mm screws.

    Is that an open frame motor? I don't think I'd be very comfortable with that. A lot safer now though. I hope you killed the power before you grabbed the ribbon!

    Looks like you fixed the problem. The Chinese lathes like mine are covered by the splash back, but I see you have fitted a longer motor so it would sill be a problem if it had one.

    Good move with the skimmer toolman.

    I picked another used 1HP 3P today - this one had been in a woodworking lathe.
    What I really like about it is that it is really well sealed obviously to keep sawdust out.. It would make a useful metal work lathe motor but I already have that sorted so this one is going on my WW lathe which has a 1/2 HP single phase on it.

    I checked out the coil continuity and the earth and it was all good. I've tried it already with the VSB - all good. I'll megger it next week.

    G'Day,
    The motor is a totally enclosed 1.5 Hp variable speed D.C. motor, only the cooling impeller is exposed.
