    Default Swiss Captivity

A requirement of my table lowering plate project is new fixings. Apart from the non pull out studs, the tee bolts that will secure the aluminium plate to the longitudinal slide need to be longer than the existing bolts. Schaublin used 22mm AF M12 nuts on all the table fixings. I thought it would make sense to stick with the 22mm size rather than use standard 18mm AF M12 nuts. A bit more work required but not as much as if I had decided to try and replicate one of the original table nuts with captive washers. There are a couple of these nuts on the table, the remainder having loose washers. Sadly Bohler don't stock 1" 4140 hexagonal bar, I made do with 1" round.

I would hate to think what one of these Swiss nuts would cost as a spare part.

I don't know if it's my Sutton tap but I had to remove the nuts from the chuck and finish them off in the bench vice. How do you blokes get on tapping 4140?

    Hi BT,
I'm confused again. Why do the new bolts need to be longer than the old? Surely the casting is thicker than 19mm or is your machine scale throwing me off?
Are you still going to be able tilt the table around the X axis without it hitting the longitudinal slide with the Alum in place?

Can you buy those clips or is it a job for rewound paper clip ?

Havent taped any 4140 M12, but even MS would have me taking if off the lathe if I could.

I was going to ask about DIN 6923 flange nuts but now realise that those crafty Swiss nuts are non-galling. Tres Chic.

How much over the recommended taping drill size did you drill them.

    Stu,

The casting is 16mm thick at the location of the lower pair of fixings. Sure I could use the original tee bolts but I may as well make some new ones. The originals can be used in the table tee slots.

The table will still be able to perform its gymnastics. As for the paper clips, I won't find out.

    Peter,

I used a 13/32" drill, hardly a whisker larger than the recommended 10.3mm. How much larger could I go before the fit of the bolt becomes sloppy? The fit at present on the original tee bolt is good, not too tight but not loose. The nuts are 18mm high.

For the application I feel a 27/64" would be suitable.
