Tailstock Alignment - A Revisit
This subject received a hammering a year ago so this is just a brush over. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/ta...6/#post1523980
I mounted the Centricator* in the green lathe's spindle this morning, the one advantage of it being 3 Morse arbored, and did a bit of testing. The tailstock barrel, indicated off the bore, with the tailstock and barrel locked, was 0.003" low. I swapped some shims and added some of Bruce "Abratool" Smith's 0.0005" tape with a result of the barrel centreline now being a thin whisker shy of 0.001", maybe 0.0008" above the spindle centreline.
Hercus published an inspection record in their 9 inch lathe sales brochure back in 1970 ( my lathe was built in '69). The permissible error for the tailstock axis in the vertical plane was 0.0005".
I swapped indicators in the Centricator. Both gave similar readings. The Centricator is designed to be used both vertically and horizontally. Given the rubbery results I achieved previously using DTIs, dial indicators and convoluted setups, I'm tempted to believe today's findings.
Any point chasing the additional error?
BT

Hi BT,
I did the same thing with my cheap chinese centricator and worked well to confirm the lathe spindle was coaxial with the tailstock, but I don't think it works for alignment if the spindle isn't aligned with the lathe bed...
So back to Rollie's dad..
Regards
Ray
PS I sent you an email regarding a UPA2...

Two Stu.
Edit : In a message from Pete F, he thought that indicator droop my still influence the accuracy of the readings. The device was intended for horizontal use even with lengthy stylus extensions. Given that the Centricator I used is in close to unused condition, I'm thinking droop my not be an issue. Hoping really.
