Thread: Let's talk ER chucks & collets
-

Something tells me that they cost more than $25 from Schaublin. Reckon maybe $1000? more?
Anyway, this looks like a noble purpose for a CTC chuck.
(My mate Mike has cut down three CTC MT4 tools for me now...looks like I might finally be OK for Deckel tooling.).
Another question: Given the cheap cost of a CTC ER32 chuck, do you think there's merit in having three or more pre-loaded with your go-to cutters?

Having cutters set up in collets saves a lot of time and hassle. I have 4 always set up, but would like a lot more.

I have duplicate collets in the popular sizes, and some extra nuts thanks to Bob. I am going to try and avoid buying more collets unless I can get 10, 12 etc separately.
So you don't have any extra ER32 chucks?

Unfortunately and unlike me, I have only one 32 chuck that being the Swiss original. It's the one that I converted to usefulness with the Rego Fix ER nut. I do have CTC's 40 and 25 chucks, again only singularly. A modified chuck to suit the EFTX collets would be real handy given that nearly all my cutters are screwed. Those collets are 16, 12, 10 and 6 in size.
I'm pretty sure CTC sells singular collets, at a slight premium. I bought the one inch ER40 collet from Mari on the assumption that it might have less runout than other far eastern versions. Might be an alternative to CTC if you are only chasing oddments.

I was just perusing the CTC website...he has ER32 chucks on MT4 tapers for $14.00. And collets for around $2.50 ea. +/-. I think I will buy a few more 10 and 12 mm collets as most of my cutters seem to be that size*
*it pays to look at PM's "for sale section: I bought fifty 10mm cutters in wax for $1 each last year. I'm hoping that will do me, even without a T & C grinder I can always have twenty sharp endmills here on rotation.
I am still looking to score a few slab mills for the horizontal arbor. That's got to be the cheapest milling around after the saw and hss flycutter

Never tried a slab mill because up till last year I didn't have the power to turn one. Closest thing I have is the 1 5/8 " end mill. I used the side of the thing last weekend to machine the end (or front) of the plane base. Slow feed and the results were silken. I dare say a slab mill would perform the same or better given it's additional support. More for the list.

Ah so! I was sorely tempted by the $14 price so I bought a couple more, and some odd collets too. Plus Perrin dude needed some tooling, so shipping got combined to some extent.

Mine are not so cheap at $39 each for a ER32/NT30 collet chuck. If they where around $20 I would buy another 5 at least.

Yeah, me too. I have to spend another $20 or so each converting them to Deckel S20 drawbar thread, hence the incremental approach.

Can you modify them yourself instead of paying someone else?

Hi Dave,
I'm stuck in the same boat with the NT30, a lot of the other ER32 chucks are half that price.
But on the plus side, the dollar is high, (1.05 last I looked) so I'm thinking it's time to get some extras.
Mainly so I can do tool changes with the CNC and not have to reset heights.
Regards
Ray

The M16:S20 gizmos are around that much. I have to cut off the MT4 taper by 25% or so, then re-tap deeper and screw in the adapter. Otherwise I'd need to turn an obscure buttress thread form and then drill and tap that for M16 or whatever the original drawbar thread is.. The Deckel relies on a male thread on the tool and a female on the drawbar. Either way its going to be $20 or the equivalent in time.

Less is more
I'm not quoting Mies. I just bought an SK30 ER32 chuck from Onlineseller68 for a touch more than CTC's chuck and Online's other 30 taper offering. Spent more because the SK30 is shorter. SK = ISO, another plus because the Schaublin has an ISO taper. My ER25 SK chuck is an Online product. I reckon it has a slight edge over CTC for finish.

p.s. the chuck cost $57 including postage.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the info, I have bought off him before and think he is linked with CTC in some way because he has a lot of the same gear.
All the 30 tapers are the same with 7/24 tapers, the only difference being the the thread pitch or the flange. NMBT has 1/2 inch 13 tread and the BT30 doesn't have the parallel on the top.
