It's all falling on deaf ears Boys.

I might just knock up a drawing. If it prevented even one injury it would be worth the trouble.

    I'll go for $30.
I had a thought that if I had a close fitting sleeve on the column it would allow it to slide up and down and then due to the reaction force from the clamp it would lock in place.
Also, that cam operated clamp is a nice low profile thing, but a toggle clamp could probably serve as an alternative. There may be an alternative brewing (if I can find a toggle clamp & sleeve & time & ...)

I wonder if in practice enough force would be generated through that sleeve to resist the torque if the drill grabbed, particularly given the table flex and general lack of rigidity in the typical machines we have. One it started to go, there would then be effectively nothing to hold the piece at all. May be a case of something appearing secure, but leading to a false sense of security should anything really happen.

I think if you were to build one, it wouldn't be that much more effort to simply drill and tap a tab on the back where a handle could positively secure the whole thing.

    Pete,

It is possible to wriggle a plate under the clamp. I'm pretty sure that it's only designed for light drilling and in use I would also use my left hand to hold the workpiece.

I'd think you'd still want a "stop pin"(thats just made up term, a nut and bolt through one of the tee slots for the work to rest against to stop it rotating). Then BTs clamp to hold it down. Of course it depends a lot on what you are drilling. I assume I dont have to go into drilling holes in sheet metal holding the work with your hand?

    Default Prima Apart.

The green paint is off. The device was originally painted dark grey.

I'm missing one spring clip. Any suggestions of where I might find a replacement?

Careful BT, you might find yourself having one or two of them yourself soon enough.

hi bob and Stuart. i use one regularly.
its a full height drill. with the same shape spindle head.
As most the other waldowns you see. the belt cowling
is steel sheet metal. with square sides painted yellow.
protruding out of the top is a 3 spiked hand wheel that
you turn to raise and lower the spindle speed.
    from slow to very fast.
its a great to use unfortunately the Morse taper needs work.
as it can drop the chuck when the drill catches.

    Hi Aaron,
I think I speak for Bob when I say "Where are the pictures?" (and for myself also)

Ha Ha. I had deleted a reference to Carlton Cold (though it should have been Draught), Aaron's signature photo prop before Stuart posted his response.
