Aaron,
I looked in my 1993 Waldown brochure and there it was. Varispeed. Infinitely variable speeds from 45 to 4500 rpm. Metal belt guard with a capstan sticking up out of it.
I look forward to viewing your photos.

Michael,
The only time I saw damage to a drill table was at school.
In fact I thing it was faulty/cheep chinese as it was only about 5mm thick.
They only manage to tear a small chunk out of it and you can bet it was deliberate. You could avoid that problem but placing a bit of flat (say 25 x 5mm fms as a washer to spread force across the area.
Cheers
Grahame

I haven't been back through the thread to see if it's already been suggested, but I usually keep a bolt (with the thread facing up) in my metal drill press table, and use it to rest steel against thats not in the vice. Quick and simple and saves your fingers if it catches up when breaking through.
