It's not all bad Nev. Wire type inserts will fix threads, they are cheap and have been used for lots of repairs, so there is no reason that your repair won't work. It's just that in critical applications they are usually not the insert of preference because correct installation is crucial and there are other types of insert that are not as sensitive to less than ideal installation or operational conditions.

Another option for you (here I'm assuming an Al manifold) is to drill out the buggered hole with something like a 90 degree countersink and then fill the hole with weld. This was a standard repair for worn holes or holes/ inserts that were in the wrong place. Having done that you can then retap as you wish (bearing in mind that the Al will now be in an annealed state).
Taking this to extremes, I once did this for the Al wishbone in an R/C car where a M4 hole was misaligned and so had chewed out. After 4 years it's still going.

Job done and manifold is fixed. Bit of a battle to get the seized stud out, but I got it eventually without more damage. Had to helicol two holes. Other two were still good. Had two attempts at the helicoils though, as my threading depth was a little short the first time and they were a little above the manifold face. Just uncoiled them to remove. Would love to speak to whoever did work on this previously. As a mechanic he would make a good butcher.

Discoverd more work after I fixed that. Water pump leaks and radiator has broken away from bottom of side support. Looks like I have a timing belt and water pump job to do next.
