Interpretations of "Gloat"
Many years ago I bought a piece of gear that was in very short supply, paid more than it was worth but "I had one". I had a bit of a gloat over it because quite a few of my mates in the industry wanted one but couldn't get one for love or money.
It has more than paid for itself since so it was obviously a good investment.
Sometimes being in the right place at the right time deserves a bit of a gloat.

4th June 2014, 12:37 AM #33As a young bloke, I had an opinion on everything, rightly or wrongly, ( mostly wrongly ) Apart from the times that I was threatened by the proverbial " 9 foot Hells Angel " ( you old P******S should remember that line ) I stuck to my guns.
Never once have I regretted standing up for my standards/principles, ( copped a couple of floggings for it over the years ) but many an occasion I regret having backed down." 9 foot Hells Angel " ( you old P******S should remember that line )
Its a forum on the Interwebby. Don't like it.....then BUGGER OFF!
Don't try and smash a young bloke because you might be offended, turn the TV OFF.
As for the slanging and political correctness of this lot, I'm game if all you naysayers are too.
Doing big hours at work at the moment, dealing with lots of professionals with ego's far larger than their abilities so it may be a day or two before yo may receive a reply
I'll spend bucket loads more effort to support a young bloke that has a go than a bunch of Whingey Whiny old blokes over the wording of a forum title
There are issues from some, about name changing. It is just a name. The thread is still the same. It is what you, the members make it.
What difference does a name change make? It does not affect the content. I am happy to go along with the majority, but I find it a little annoying that there are issues with making changes that benefit a number of people, just for reasons that have not been explained. You will still be able to find it, and reply to it. If you have "real" issues with change then explain these issues.
I think that the thread title should give some idea as to what the thread is relating to, some of the titles suggested so far do not meet that criteria, as do a lot of other threads on this forum.
On another machinists forum that I frequent, threads with "meaningless topic titles" are quickly locked.
Regards, Lex.

Personally I prefer keeping the thread title as it is..
It only means you are excited you bought something and wish to spread the news of your excitement..
"Today's tool acquisition"... How bloody dull... "Today's tool gloat" has a risque connotation about it and makes me want to read it.... Even if it is only a about a bunch of people getting excited over buying a lump of metal...
No one has ever bought something new or rare and been excited over it?
I have not seen in the thread in question where someone has been more excited over the fact they hammered the seller's price down considerably. In fact I have not seen where anyone has ever posted that at all.
Other then maybe felling a bit jealous at times, has anyone been offended by what has been posted in the "tool gloat" thread?
We all know the title is tongue in cheek.. Are we judging the thread simply by it's title and not by what is inside it?
The thread title will get changed now for sure... But does that not really show how well political correctness has been forced upon us that now we comply automatically?Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

Dean, some of the titles suggested so far were "Look what I found" and "Look what I got", do you actually think they are meaningful and give any idea that they relate to machine tools or equipment? At least the original title mentions tools so why not leave it as is instead of being so worried about political correctness.

You are right there Dean, the english language is the most ''bastardised'' language in the globe. So many words having similar meanings and so many choices. Some words offend, some congratulate and some thank.
No malice or any inuendo was aimed at any forum member. As it is as been said a matter of opinion.
Take that word 4[four] letter we hear on a regular basis F???.How many contexts can that be used and with what gravity it is used.
Jealousy is a human trait we all at some stage have had those thoughts or airings.
I have never worried about being jealous of any one or any thing of their achievements, aquisitions or status.
We all share a common interest here in metal working and like any other organisations there will be conflicts of opinion.
I too aquire and have aquired lots of gear over the years but would not post them on the thread to be targeted as a ''braggart'' or smug.I know it is individual choice.just an extra 2 bobs worth. John.

I had thought this all done and dusted? There was some discussion in said thread, not as much as here, but the general consensus was to start fresh. Michael did so.
Then comes this thread where apparently we are beating on Andre? Is it just me or is Fraggle the only one that see's it this way?
I HATE these threads. They always attract a lot of attention and posts where someone who may be making something interesting will only attract a few. Isn't that what we are here for, our interest in all things metalwork and related tools, not the politics?

Which is fine.
But am I wrong in thinking you now want to form a possy and enforce that decision on someone else?
Are "we" going to change of all threads with "gloat" in them? Maybe we should have it added to the words already filtered? Any other words while we are at it? It would be nice to get them all out of the way in one go.
One wonders why people so offended by the title are still reading the thread. This is I believe the third occasion this iisue has been bought up(the G word.... really?). If it doesn't get changed this time will this be the end of it? If the word is removed can we revisit it every 6 months in the hope that maybe we can reinstate it?
Just for the record I believe I rarely bought price into it(unless in hind sight I felt I overpaid for what turned out to be a pos). The majority(if not all) of the items were purchased on ebay, so I either paid what the seller was asking* or I won the auction there by paying more than anyone else<clarkson> in the world</clarkson>(well the ebay world at any rate). I rarely haggle, for the most part I either pay or not. If the weather turns to I may even have a flip through all 95 pages and see what turns up.
Stuart
*I think there were two ebay items I made offers on
p.s. it seems I do have to much time on my hands. Shame I have the English skills of a 12 year old.

Not necessarily non-members they could be members that haven't logged in (maybe they don't want you to know they are watching
I am watching this thread with interest and have been wondering what the reaction would have been if a mod had suggested the removal of that offending word (sorry can't bring myself to actually type it)
