    Default Threading Stainless

How difficult is it to cut a thread on the end of a stainless steel rod?

Will a regular set of dies, P&N or Chinese survive it or will it blunt the die?

Following "Anorak Bob" I was considering changing some of the bars on machine handles to stainless.

Should be OK if you use type 303, it will cut like mild steel and not workharden.
I'm not familiar with other types.

Neil, Would 303 be your most common type or special order?

I recently used a cheap Chinese die to cut a 3/8 NPT thread on some 316 stainless. I was surprised at the result. The thread was nice, clean and well formed. I used Trefolex and backed off after each half turn.

From memory the die was carbon steel, not even HSS.

    Cheers,

If you want a reasonable (ie more than say25-50mm) length of thread, there's no way I'd cut it with a die. I'd go and buy a length of 316 allthread in the pitch I needed and weld, thread or otherwise butcher the gripping end to suit the task at hand.

    Certainly use Trefolex.

Depending on what I'm doing, sometimes I will single point a thread to 90% and finish off with a die.

“……common type or special order? “
We bought a couple of lengths from a supplier in Dandenong, off the shelf not special order. Can’t remember the supplier name, but I see 303 on a few local websites.
