Threads on finishing, finish, good finish
FYI,
Was becoming quite frustrated with my poor quality finishes and did a search, restricted to metalwork forum.
Some good info in these threads that other people may find interesting to read or revise or get round to trying that good idea they saw ............... etc.

Handy that it is possible to refer to a search with a link like this, good feature of the forum.

Search
Hey thats interesting.
I tested that link a few times and it worked, but now it won't, something to do with session and cookies etc ?
ok,
1. top right hand corner of this screen click on advanced search link - small letters just below magnifying glass
2. in new window click on left hand tab called "Search Single Content Type"
3. in next window key word to search for is finish, search titles only, and forum is metalwork forums - see attached screenshot - if you don't have option for metalwork forums then make sure you have clicked on the "Additional Options. You then get a list off all threads in Metalwork forum with "Finish" in the title - some really interesting threads.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do me a favour and cut & paste the address that your search generates into a new browser window and see if it works.
If you just do a basic search on the word finish you have to wade through all the pen turning and woodwork posts - hard work.
vertical shear tool - flycutter and boring bar applications
This is an interesting thread.
He takes the vertical shear tool idea and then applies it to a facing tool, a boring bar, a fly cutter and a milling cutter.
The Home Machinist! • View topic - Vertical shear bit
Seems that its a fairly old idea and well documented in various books.
Our fire plan is to leave early on dangerous days, so am playing on internet in an air conditioned caravan park.
finish
Bill
This is what i use on free machining steel, for the last .003" or so cut . It leaves a beaut finish , even on that horrible black stuff . I hone the edge of course .
Hi Mike,
How does it go on longer parts that may have a tendency to flex and chatter? I have a similar tool but have found it tends to like to chatter unless the part is either large in dia or near to its support. No feed rates, speed or DOC changes seem to help. I would think it has to do with the lack of back rake, but i have tried it in an angled toolholder and it was no better.
Thu Uber shear is my HSS finishing tool of choice now. Of course the finish is never as good as a good carbide cut (or the round nose tool for that matter) but it will take a whisker off if required.
It is tangential, the red line is the cutting edge. The difference is the included angle of the cutting edge, the ones in the link are probably 80-90deg, mine is more like 45deg.
Looking from the front of the tool the cutting edge is slanted maybe 5deg (from vertical) from left (top) to right. The V grind that gives the angle is parallel to the HSS, the angle is made by grinding the front of the tool at an angle, so you are grinding into the V more at the top.
There is a video of one Phil put up some time back, i'll try to find the link.
