Had some time to myself today!
Hi,
I had some time to myself in the shed today when the missus took 3 off the kids to the shops. A job came into the workshop last week (I think), a hydraulic power pack which someone had lost the ball handle at the end of a lever.
When I bought my little Hercus mill the previous owner threw in some cast aluminium balls.
This is the first attempt. I filed down the sprue and ball itself. Put it into a 3 Jaw chuck (I should of used a 4 Jaw but was being lazy), file it some more. I had some problems finding wet & dry, emery paper etc but it didn't turn out to bad. When I do some for my lathe etc, the finish will be better.
The fun part should be holding it while drilling and tapping it. I might even put in a grub screw so this one won't get "lost".

Nice job mate, It dosn't matter what it is for shed time is shed time. Even if it's only to clean up a bit, which is how I seem to be spending all my time in there lately

Will the ball fit in the bore of your chuck?
I did a job the other day along the same lines and found fitting the reverse jaws helped(along with a broom handle through the spindle to push it into place while tightening.

My garage is always in mess, we have to keep it locked the little ones don't get in there (I always clean up the swarf, put away heavy items and turn off all power though).

Hi,
I finished off the knob today. Cut off the sprue, drilled and tapped the hole and gave it another polish - this time with autosol. Came up a lot nicer (more than it needs anyway).
Can't post any photo's at the moment, either the system won't let me or my computers playing games??

HI,
You can post photo's again. Drilled, tapped, re-polished and fitted knob to machinery. Used loctite to secure it.
