This model you have to run it backwards.. Or you can turn the main lead screw with an allen key. The main lead screw has a spring loaded quick release feature in it that disengages the fine feed so you can manually rapid it..

AFAIK the smaller UPA1, 2, 3 models have a quick return feature...

The members here such as Bob have driven my to buy and find more accurate tools and work to higher levels or precision which i previously would not have done and i thank them for that.

Those Somua micrometers are nice... I have a new 25-50 one... Made in Czechoslovakia...

just picked this not so little dial indicator up in as new condition and works beautifully
the dial is quite large at about 70mm across and large number (might have been made for older machinist's )
res .ooo1 should be usefull for the surface grinder or tool and cutter grinder

I just bought this thing...

took custody of this stuff today gratis from a mate...
the edge finder and dial indicator have never been used

the inserts are new .....the 4off at the top of the top packet are ceramic...now I need to fing a tool holder for them ...he showed me them at work on some 70HRC scrap die stuff...the tip of the insert and material peeling off was glowing fire engine red...maybe a bit brighter...and the finish..it was as though it was polished
I asked if they worked on mild steel and as he had never tried he did a test, and the finish was nearly as good...

as per RC tip he going to save me some old inserts so I can make some

PS that was a solid carbide centre drill in the plastic pouch

My gloat...

Jones and Shipman 540 surface grinder, managed to get it within easy driving distance.. Ex NSW Tafe, older plain bearing head model...

The ways look to be acceptable.... Probably won't have to break out the scraper for this one. It has been bastardised a bit... They have put metric dials on the machine, probably during the metrication of Australia in the 70's.. Spindle downfeed is 2 microns per graduation, but a fine feed click moves it 2.5 microns (0.0001") same as the cross feed, one graduation is 0.04mm but the fine feed is in inches...

Good old machine, spent a bit of time in front of one of them. In fact I know where these is one in bits that I'm going to try and buy. Its got no motor and no coolant tank though unfortunately.

Whats with the cover(?) over the on and off buttons?

I would like a spare complete ball bearing wheel head for this in case the plain bearings ever give up the ghost... They are unrepairable... The finish I got when giving it a test run was quite good though, for no coolant and no balanced wheel so they could very well last me forever, but you never know...

Cover is so the controls can be physically locked out.. Maybe it was an instructors only machine at one time...
