Tom senior shaper
HI ALL,
I was out at Work this Evening taking some Pictures of a Tool Post Grinder for another Thread https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/to...-plans-138306/ . Anyway I thought I would take some Pictures of the old Tom Senior Shaper for the Shaper Fans on this Forum. I don't know what Model it is the Makers Brass Plate says
TOM SENIOR
"ATLAS WORKS"
HIGHTOWN LIVERSEDGE
YORKS,ENG.
A bit of History to the best of My knowledge, The Shaper originally came from the Mallacoota Power House (before the SEC came to Mallacoota about 1972). The Power House was Owned and Run by Tom Davies. The Shaper was apparently mounted on a Metal Lathe. The Guy who owns the Shaper now Lent it to My Boss quite a number of Years ago as He was pushed for Room.
I remember a Disaster My Boss had with it some Years ago. He was Planing a pair (one at a time) of Yamaha Outboard Cylinder Heads that were Warped (unusual for Yamaha Heads). He was Planing the first one when 'oops' the Tool came loose and gouged the Head - result one stuffed Head. Well He still thought He would do the next one, I thought You're Game Dick. Well Guess what, the same thing happened now Two stuffed Heads. We all had a Laugh about it at the Time.
I will Post the Pictures in two lots, because I am having trouble uploading them. All The Best steran50 Stewart

Thanks Stewart, for the photos. That is the least traditional looking shaper I have ever seen. I almost looks home made. While almost all other shapers or pictures of shapers I have seen, basically look very similar, this one looks like it could have been made by someone who had been given a brief to construct a machine to shape metal by shaving it with a lathe type tool, in a linear motion, but without ever having seen a normal shaper or picture of same.

Rob, have a look at some Adept shapers and I think you will see some similarities: adept shaper - Google Search

Thanks Bryan for the link, and yes, I can see the similarities. I also found lathes from the same manufacturer, and it is no wonder they often refer to the 1920s to the outbreak of WW2 as the austerity decade. The equipment was small in capacity, feature poor, and so lacking in basic accessories, that the cheap imported lathes available to us today, are almost like a Monarch 10EE in comparison.

No Stuart, that is a filing machine. You had better straighten him out on that, That huge shaving coming off the work-piece that BTs Cincinnati cataloge should convince him that shapers aren't for filing. This is a picture of a filing machine you can use to point out the difference

lol
Can't say I recall having seen one of those before(well not in that size). I have seen a "bandfile" though, but the price of the blades/files(?) scared me off.
