recomend a new lathe.
hi all,got the nod and work to justify buying a new hobby lathe.have about 4k to spend on a lathe and stand, tooling can come a little later.would like 1.00 to 1.200m between centres, about 350mm swing or better, power feeds,40mm bore, single phase.as much quality as price will allow.metric and imperial if it comes in under price. Can people advise whats around and what else i should look for,it will be for general turning and nothing specialised.thanks, danny

Its a little short better centers for what you want. It also has a 38mm bore if you really want 40mm.(in fact mine is a little under 38mm).
You might want to have a look at http://www.appliedmachinery.com.au/e.../lathes-centre
They are generally a little longer between centers than the same H&F machine.
In fact you really need to measure the bed yourself as I found some supplies tend to round the center distance up, some round it down. So there can be more then 100mm difference between a 900mm centers and a 1000mm centers.
There is another place close by but their name escapes me atm, I'll try and dig it up.

Hi Stuart, Danny,
That SM1236A looks like it might be close...
SM-1236A.Bench Lathe, 925mm Centres, 300mm Swing, 38mm Bore, 3 & 4 Jaw Chucks, 2 Axis DRO, Stand Inc - Asset Plant & Machinery
It already has DRO and QCTP, two very handy upgrades to have on a lathe (in my opinion at least)
Regards
Ray

Hi,
You seem to know what size of lathe your after and your price range, but I doubt you will get a new one with a 40mm or larger bore for that price, as I think they jump up to around $7000 for a larger bore than 38mm.
I would look around for a second hand large bore machine as there are plenty around. Some of these machines have had little work, while others have had a hard life, so you will just have to go and look them over.
If you can get by with a 38mm bore there are plenty to choose from. I am pretty sure the AL336 is only 900mm between centres and you would have to jump up to the AL340 for 1000mm centres which I think is a tad over you $000 budget.
