Just to follow through with this thread, I ended up by reaching a compromise. I have a good old three phase polisher, so I polished the old engraving until it all but disappeared, or was so light you had to look for it to see it, and now I'll re-engrave them in another spot with my initials. Seems the way to go.

Sounds like a good compromise. Just make sure there is enough room left for the next set of initials. After that I reckon you can give up worrying.

    Drsed,
Just reading through the threads. You said you have a solution that seems to work. My mind started to tick....with the chromed tools, if you were keen enough you could get the chrome plating removed attend to the affected area by fine sanding then get them rechromed. You may be able to engrave them before they are rechromed and hence nearly permanently preserving your identifying marks. I have no idea what it would cost. What made me think along those lines was my brother was restoring a 33 Dodge car. The radiator cowl was straight but was terribly pitted with old age. The plater bloke ran it through the coppering stage twice and that was enough for for the pitting to "disappear" and the end result was a really nice finish.
As I said, just a thought
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod
