    Bryan,
That shaper is still looking good, you did a great job on that and have it set up well now.

    Default Drilling rounds on centre

Spent some time attempting to improve accuracy in drilling holes through round shafts on centre.
Set up a hardened & ground vee block I had made- way- back- when.
The objective was to provide an accurate centre hole in the vee for setting up with a machined register & or dial indicator in the drill press or mill.
Accomplished in the lathe using a Die Grinder at 20000 rpm & a mounted point dressed to suit, to true up the original drilled hole in the vee block.
All went well, however as one pursues accuracy other defects are discovered, namely my drill press has a .015" that is 15 thou movement in the quill. A lot of movement.
I have checked out a range of new drill presses & they all seem to have quill movement. Gavins drill bush & vee block concept (see his post of Jan 22 on this thread) has appeal & that may be the next project.
    regards

    Hi Bruce,
I've always wondered when "way- back- when" was now that you've given me a picture with the date on it I know, thanks

How did you set the Vee block centered in the 4 jaw?

I've never checked the quill movement in the hercus, I'd guess its not that flash but I'm on the way to the shed now I'll check.

Yes 1960, it just seems like yesterday, but when I see the numbers it makes me feel a bit old.
I set the Vee Block up in the chuck using a dial indicator & accurate right angle square I know the vee is did centre with the sides of the block, because I ground it that way. The hole was not central.
So by setting up a square off the lathe bed against the side of the block, checking with a dial indicator rotating chuck 180 degrees, rotating & repeating many times & adjusting chuck, it was finally central.
Generally drill presses with their loose quills I think are made to a price, The little Hercus end mill head is very accurate, as are a lot of the Mill Drills I believe.
    regards
    Bruce
