    Default Torture Dungeon

This isn't not metal related but may be of interest to a few.

I had been invited to go spend a morning at UTS Civil Eng destructive test facility no testing was in progress it was more about seeing the faciility, equipment and Dave's play area. What a job he has.

A Test beam of concrete for a torsional test

    Actuator

    Two x 200t hydraulic press

I like this set up a 30t and 50t for testing beams in situ vertical

Dave had this tuck in the corner of his workshop if anyone knows its use??

There was this old piece of junk out in the hall way

There are other photos via the ink above some Dave sent me prior to me he has the biggest shed with some great toys and states he never got over the Meccano faze.

The device in the 5th photo down was made by soilcrete - a trick name for cement stabilised earth (that is, mix some cement powder in with the dirt you have and compact it - stabilised earth). A quick search shows they are not in business anymore but I would suggest that the kit was used for testing mixes to determine the best ratio for the earth at hand.

Must be nice to have a workshop where you get to break stuff intentionally

    What?

He gets to break things and doesn't get into strife for it!

What a job.Almost as good as myth busters.

Is it a Nata Certified lab?

    Oh my goodness!!
If that's a piece of junk out in the hallway, what time would they like me to pick it up
That would have been a fun trip. Imagine destroying stuff for a living.
I had two apprentices I could have given Dave on loan, and they didn't need any fancy equipment to help either.

Yeh makes them to break them Grahame and all for fun

Had to look up Nata as had not heard of it still none the wiser. I would say with the testing and who they test for as its not just a Lab for students it may well be.

Look at the I beam assembly they are suspended from. It is in 2 parts and there will be a vertical bolt between them tieing up each of the the cylinders. The G clamps are merely there to prevent horizontal movement.

Fair enough.I guess that makes it easier to slide them sideways on the rails to set spacing.
