Thanks for the comments fellas. I wouldn't call it a resto, in that I wasn't aiming for originality. Just a tidy-up. There's no shortage of imperfections, but I just wasn't willing to spend any more time on it. A blind man and all that. The paint was all brushed. It's White Knight epoxy enamel in Forest Green. Nice paint. Limited palette though.
I ended up not bothering about the gear. I figured it's under no real stress, crashes aside. Maybe I'll make a new one, just for fun, once I have a gear cutting setup. The sliding block I just rebushed, tidied up the faces with a file and slapped it in. I showed it to the local machinist and that was his advice. It doesn't seem to make any noise. I'll keep an eye and an ear on it, and be diligent about lubrication.
Now I really need to spend some time with my family. For my sins I have a bathroom reno to deal with. (What the hell is it with women and bathrooms? (Don't answer that.))
PS: The boat thing is a reference to a quote that compares shapers to the sailing ships of machine tools. It's an appealing image.Last edited by Bryan; 16th March 2011 at 03:15 PM. Reason: PS
