    Default TOS shaper

Well I got off the net and on the phone and look what I found:

It's a 1959, 18" TOS. No vice, needs wiring. Mine for $600. There's a catch: It's in Bloody Vicbournia and transport is my problem. I just got one quote for $900.

So I'm considering hiring a trailer and towing it myself. He reckons it's about 1250kg. With a trailer say 2T even. The AU traytop is rated for 2300 so it should be ok. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about the prospect.

    Anyone got a better idea?

Great find Bryan, I am really happy for you finding one at a reasonable price.
It looks like it has auto down feed on the tool head as well.
I would get it paid for before someone else spots it, I have missed things like that.

I got mine home on a rented dual axle trailer behind a 6cyl VY commodore station wagon no problems at all. The trailer was one of those with no load sharing suspension (4 separate springs) so it didn't put a lot of weight on the car.
That is one of the better brand shapers and the electrics are so simple to do(a motor and a switch). It was probably 3 phase any way so if you need to you can run it off a 3-3.5hp 240v motor for a home shop.

Thanks Dave (and for your PM). That's great about the downfeed. I wouldn't know what it looks like. Might be missing a crank handle, but no biggie. And if a poxy commie can tow one, the mighty falcon will do it eezy-squeezy BTW, did I mention I've got 3 phase?

    No problems,
You can see the down feed on this side on the front of the ram just behind the tool head. As the ram goes back and forth it will hit on a stop and turn the screw of the tool head at the preset amount each stroke. Not something that is on allot of shapers and your lucky getting one with it.
When doing things like dovetails or down feed cuts you wont have to manually screw the tool post down.
I used to be a Ford person, the last one I had was an XE back in 86. I lost interest in them when they continued on with the same boat anchor motor and went with the Holden with it's V6 and have not looked back.

I towed my B/S horizontal mill home from Melb, She weighs in about 1200kg.
You need to have a few running boards on the trailer to distribute the weight evenly over the
whole floor, This way you reduce the chance of snapping the trailer in half.
I am 4 hours east of Melb, And my last road trip wass to Adelaid to pick-up a pallet load of demolition saws (Bloody evilbay)lol...Anyways it was a hell of alot cheaper to drive to SA and back than it was to freight,By at least $500 cheaper....Do yourself a favour save some dough and drive down to collect it.

Thankfully I won't have to descend the Hill of Doom with a load on. I'll turn off long before that. But I pity truckies every time I see one crawling down there.

"Hill of doom" lol I've only been down it once, that was about 20 years ago, it must have made an impression.

Would anyone like to have a guess at what the hand wheel behind the control for the power down feed, in front of the stroke position adjuster is?(angle adjuster for the ram is my only guess)

I was wondering about that handwheel too, but didn't want to look dumb. And is that a lube pump below the ram?

I guess so.. not sure, unless its something to do with the downfeed but I dont think so.
It appears to have square ways on the ram. I wonder how you adjust that? two tapers gibs maybe?(Bryan is about to find out lol)

Not sure what the handle wheel is, but that does look like some type of lube pump, as it looks like it has line running out of it.
You have certainly got the one with all the bells and whistles, I think it was worth waiting for. It's good to see it going to someone that wants and needs it.
It does look to have square ways Stuart, they are probably like yours and have the sideway adjustment on the other side.

I towed mine down a skinny country road, pot holes everywhere and trucks coming the other way, the trailer handled it no problems.
I agree with what Matt said above about taking planks to distribute the weight on the trailer. I too planks with me because I didn't want to put dints in the trailer and have to pay for it.

Don't forget to get pictures when you get it, we want to see what a rolls Royce shaper looks like and what all the bells and whistles do.

The handwheel might be used to angle the head...

This book shows a shaft in a similar position which is for adjusting the position of the ram. Index of /Shaper Books/ITC Shaper Book. It's the first pic, on p5 of the pdf (it's an 8.4 meg file). Will let you know in a few days I guess.

You are right their, P6 shows the see through side view and shows the screw going back to the pivot arm. So you undo the lock on top then wind it back or forward.

Just another feature on Brians Rolls Royce shaper.LOL

Looks like Bryan has it. I had thought of that, but I then thought "no one would do that"........ well it seems someone would. I wonder what happens if you don't do it up tight enough? I've had mine slip once when I was trying to cut a groove 1/4" wide. might have saved me a cutter.
