I like the way you say it just arrived. You give the impression as if you have no idea where it came from. Sounds like a term I use when explaining an arrival of an ebay purchase in the mail that somehow my wife sees before I get to intercept it!

It looks like you are taking over from GQ as the forum's resident procurer of exotica.

My Mahr catalogue dated 1965. shows a 40H and a 40HF bench micrometer. Both are slightly different in appearance to yours. I'll dust off the Nikon and furnish you with a photo or two.

Because I'm not in during the day one option is for Australia Post to leave a little red card and it means I then have to leave work early to get what ever has been delivered.
Instead I get things delivered to work. There is always someone there and there is also the skip to put excess packaging in. In the case of that post it literally had "just arrived".
Surely you all understand and see the elegance of that solution to the problems of delivery?

Thanks Bob. Could you also manage a close up of the bottom half of the second page with the various anvils? It looks like Mahr have anticipated what I thought would be a good feature (interchangeable anvils).

The unit was in a large box that it shared with a light bulb - I think the maker thought that it would keep things an even temperature or something. I asked the seller to remove the box as it was no use to me and would save shipping. However, it is a bit grubby. Once cleaned up I'll have to make up another box for it. (My shed is filling up with boxes to protect things. Too busy doing woodwork to do anything with metal...)

I went out into the shed after I asked for those details and cleaned things up with some acetone and very worn emery paper (touches of flight rust here and there). As a result the mic has come up a treat. I just need to find a soft brush to clean out the knurling then I'll post an after pic. I suppose I could do with a new toothbrush...

I also managed to extract the anvils. Based on your chart I have a 40H/2 pair. I'd like a pair with a decent tip size (say 6mm or so) so I can do 3 wire thread measurement, but making them is going to be tricky. The taper is around 15mm long and goes from 4mm down to around 3.5mm. I'd want to make a socket as well, so that's going to be a mighty fine boring bar. Plan B will be a D type reamer.
The lathe is up to it I'm sure but I don't know whether I am

Yep. I'm hearing you. I have worked with plenty of guys over the years that have organised their paypal account default address as their work location. Saves copping grief from the wife because of all their gadget purchases on ebay!

Gee Simon - you'll be giving everyone the wrong impression of me if you are not careful.

In the mean time, Mahr sent back some information to me on the micrometer and anvils. No date but based on Bob's pictures I'm guessing possibly '80's? The respondent said that it had been discontinued for a long time but then the '80's ended 23 years ago .

Similar to Bob's post, but in metric units. From the look of it mine has been modified (but not irreversibly).
I've asked for a price on a set of anvils (which are available). I guess I can hope to be pleasantly surprised
