Transporting a Tool and Cutter Grinder
Dave J sent me a PM asking me if I had seen the post in the Hercus area offering for sale, a No.3 Hercus T & C grinder. I hadn't. I have sent a message to the seller advising him of my wish to buy it. If the deal goes ahead, I will bring it home on a trailer.
I don't know if this machine has ball bearing ways. It's old. This model appears in my 1949 McPhersons catalogue.
I have read about the damage that can be caused during transport as a result of ball indentation.
Any suggestions for avoiding potential damage?

( I might be being a bit too anal. My 13 was lifted by the horizontal head casting. Certainly not the prescribed method. It's not a Bridgeport.)

Bob,
Judging by the diameter of the table handwheel I doubt it will have a rolling bearing slide. I suspect the table could be lifted off for transport. Alan.

Thank you Alan,
Should the sale eventuate, I will bear that in mind. My preferred method of transport would be to dismantle the thing and stick in the back of the Holden, but that base looks big and heavy. A trailer it might have to be. Your observation gives me some comfort.
Bob.

The base would be around 80/100 kg.
If you lock the top via the clamp bolt and lock the table in position and tie down with 2 straps it would be fine.
If its a great concern add a couple more straps.

Home in one piece
Thanks to Peter Brown's secure lashing, my new plaything is home. Funny how things work out. What I thought was one of the pair of centres turned out to be the internal grinding attachment. Disappointing to know that the centre is gone but definitely a very large plus to have the attachment. The internal spindle is driven by a large pulley fixed to the main spindle in place of the grinding wheel. Shouldn't be too hard to knock something up. The other missing attachments will prove more of a challenge.
