Tale of a Talysurf 10
Last weekend i went to a garage sale at a engine re builders that was closing down. I didn't think there would be much there I would be interested in, but as i walked in the door I saw a talysurf 10 on the bench. I had a chat to the owner and the said it worked but it needed a new stylus that was easy to replace. I had a quick look at it and thought it looked ok, so i made an offer and he accepted it.

It consists of 3 parts the readout in the first pic, the probe in the 2nd, which attaches to the traverse unit in the 3rd. The unit is for measuring surface profile which includes surface roughness and also larger deviations from flatness like waviness. I'll scan the pages out of the manual and post later, that will explain it better than i can. when i got it home i started playing with it and discovered that the stylus was actually broken. I thought that this model had an interchangeable stylus but it doesn't, its part or the whole reader head. Replacement cost $1000+. i Think i will try to glue the stylus back on. To be continued............

Nice find!
Does that do the local flatness repeatability measurement? ( like the repeat-o-meter )

Is this a cross between a say a Mitutoyo surface roughness tester and a Starrett repeat-o-meter?

I don't think its like a repeat o meter. Attached are some of the pages out of the manual. I think they will explain things better than I can. I had a bit more of a play with it today. I when i powered it up with the pick unit collected the needle on the gauge swings around to maximum and flickers around. I looked in the manual and decided to check the globe to see if it was working. there is a little window on the pickup to check if it is working, and there was only darkness. I pulled the globe out and it looked ok, i did a continuity test with my multimeter and that said it was ok. next i decided to pull the covers off the pickup and see if i could trace the wiring and check if the globe has power.

I found a very small broken wire so that's part of my problem. I might have to find someone to fix that, I'm not confident i can solder that without creating more problems for myself. there is another cover i want to pull off but i need a smaller screwdriver. job for next weekend.
