Default Truck Brake Drum Shed Heater

I have been given 3 truck brake drums, I would like to make a heater for my shed.

Does anyone have any plans or pics to give me some pointers?

Thanks for that, did a search and didn't get a hit

Some ideas there, although the ones I have are truck brake drums and are cast iron. SIL has one in Adelaide and next time I'm there I will need to take closer look and take some pics.

Found something similar to his here.

I find that funny heavy vehicle hubs and rims and the fellow who comes up trumps is a Bedford..........not GM, Ford, Cummins.

Fred If I had the room I'd get you to make 2nd one.

When I Googled them there were a lot came up from ebay, probably sold, but the pics were still there that might help.

I also saw the other link you put up but couldn't find any more info to go with those pics.

An alternative to brake drums (bloody heavy) is something like this made from SS drums from tumble dryers.

hi bobl How much heat does it put out?
Im curious I once mad a fire bucket out of a stainless steel washing machine drum it turned out to be very poor I think the shiny stainless steel just reflected the heat around inside made another one out of a steel drum and worked perfectly

    big shed

I made a brake drum heater many years ago then my old man made one out of a hot water service the difference was night and day on the heat output it halved my wood consumption simple to build 2
let me know if you want any pic and details

    cheers

When it is shiny it puts out less heat but as it ages - about 4-5 long burns and goes that gold brown colour it starts to put out a lot more heat and it puts it out very quickly but only while it's burning wood. A break drum set up will have more thermal inertia so take a bit longer to heat up but then will have much more even heat than a stainless steel unit even when it's not burning.

I fixed the thermal inertial issue by lining the inside with fire bricks - but the main use we have for it is we take it camping - without the fire bricks. We use it at home as an outdoor Pizza oven.

One small benefit of living in Perth is that there are very few days of the year when I need a heater.

    Hi Big Shed ,

I have made a couple out of cast drums for mates after i made my original one . I will see if i can get some photos of them for you . i made them in much the same way as the one in your link but i made the bottom drum in to the ash catcher with a grill between the second and bottom drums . I welded them up using my 250amp mig welder using 1.0mm wire but with the highest settings which worked ok .

I like the Spikes Drum heater /oil burner i might have a crack at building one like that next , most info i have read on the net suggests they put out a lot more heat .

    cheers Plushy

That would be good, look forward to it.

BobL, like your idea of using clothes dryer drums, but I have 3 truck drums not 3 clothes dryer drums. Also wonder about the heat output and durability of you heater.

Heat output is no problem - it comes roaring out. Longevity will be an issue. The bottom half of that of that heater has been used maybe 40 times and it's showing signs of burning out. It's more of a WA than a Vic or Tassie heater.
