Tumble Reverse Confusion
Hi All, After reading Oohsams thread on lathe buying advice C6 vs Al 250g im confused re comments on a tumble reverse gear on these smaller machines, if i were to buy a new chinise lathe say a CQ6230A does that mean u cannot cut left hand threads or machine left to right,
PS, I have had computer problems for quite a while & have not been able to post so have been reading only, hopefully all fixed now, many thanks to all for great info as usual, steve

A tumbler gear just puts an extra gear into the train so that the direction of the leadscrew is reversed. Provided that your lathe has a tumbler gear then you can cut threads RH and LH. All is not lost though because even if you haven't got that there is probably a way to add an extra gear and achieve the same thing. I think there are tumbler gear mods out there on the net too if you want to make it easy.

Hi Pench,
The CQ6230 spindle forward/reverse lever is located on the carriage.. up for forward, down for reverse, and it reverses the motor itself, no gearing change... The lead screw forward - reverse is located on the head. And reverses the direction of the lead screw, not the spindle. So, you can cut threads both ways or power feed both ways, both the carriage and have crossslide power feed.

This is one way to add one to a 9x20 lathe.
