What type of coolant do you use?
Hello all,
I was reading an article in a magazine about coolant and the author makes mention of a "home brew" coolant made up of white spirit 40% and engine oil 60%. Anyone out there heard of this or use this?
Cheers,
Simon

I haven't heard of it, but the blue stuff Ray uses on his grinder sounds good as you can see through it. I am going to look into it up this way when I need some more.

Hi Simon,
I've been lately using a 50-50 mix of lanox and kerosene, I think kersosene is similar to white spirit?
The water based coolant Dave referred to is Fuchs Eco-cool, and I use that on the grinder, but it's pretty good as a water based rust preventative as well, so I have a mix of eco-cool and detergent that is handy for cleaning off oil.
Straight metho makes a good coolant as well, especially for aluminium.
Regards
Ray

Hi Simon,
Coolant for what?
It doesnt sound all that cheap, unless you're just talking about making up a couple of litres.

I'd be a little worried on a mill of anything with motor oil in it. I tend to get coolant all over the place when I use it, which is bad enough at 20:1. 60% motor oil would seem to get messy quick.........but hey it could be worth a shot.

Hi,
I use lube alloy oil. I find it ok, but see through oil would be good. Any chips I leave on the mill do tend to rust though, but not the mill itself.

I have been using Callington Ultra Synthet 971, that is what my supplier has stocked. I use it at 5% concentration mixed with water. It seems to work well, has rust inhibitors (so no rusty swarf or machines), is non-carcinogenic and does not stink up over time. I use it on the lathe and mill and also with the bandsaw and hacksaw.
The first step towards knowledge is to know that we are ignorant.

Hi,
I'm using kero and compressor oil at the moment (from a spray bottle), works fine.
I did score a litre of real coolant from work awhile ago. Just oil which you mix with water. Can't remember the brand, but is commercial/industrial type.
Ben.
