UK - Australia parcel services
I need to get 10kg or so from the UK, does anyone have recommendation for a parcel service?
Royal Mail/Parcel Force prices are off with fairies, £135 or AU$240. Googling shows several UK consolidators quoting a more palatable £60 to £70 but presumably some companies are more reliable than others.

It seems that all of the bushrangers no longer live in Australia.

I have used Skypax once, i seem to remember even with the 12 quid fee they were the cheapest at the time. Nothing overly exceptional or poor about the service.

Currently something is being sent with www.parcel2go.com - don't know how that is going as it is not here yet. I suspect that the seller is adding something in for postage because it seems very expensive for 1.7kg.
RDGtools use www.dpd.co.uk . RDG sent something last month and it got here quickly for a reasonable cost.
The other option is if you can get the other end to send to the www.shipito.com depot in Austria as they seem to be reasonably priced when they ship from the US.

That will probably create a problem for escaping VAT. The various vendors seem to have different opinions on when VAT is not charged. I made a purchase from a vendor in France who said they can ship within France VAT free as long as the payment comes from overseas, and conversely if the payment comes from within France but the goods are shipped outside the EU then there is still VAT applied. I know, doesn't make much sense, particularly as other vendors have said exactly the opposite to both those situations.
Also, the Austrian Shipito rates will certainly take the wrinkles out of your forehead. Nothing like the rates out of the USA. The cheapest shipping I have found out of Europe is DHL Paket but it has to be posted from Germany. Takes about 3-4 weeks to get here. DHL is owned by Deutsch Post so they have a collaborative thing going on.

VAT from GB or the EU is definitely NOT DUE if the product is exported.
If for example I buy something in person inside the EU, I will have to stop at the customs office when exiting the EU, and present the goods and ask an officer to stamp my receipt as proof of exportation. With this receipt I can get the VAT refunded from the seller, either in cash or as a discount at my next visit, or by sending the stamped proof of exportation back to the seller.
With mail order it works essentially the same. The problem is that it is up to the seller to get proof of exportation (the parcel receipt) and claim a VAT refund for himself. Obviously this involves some extra effort and paperwork time wastage. And this is why some sellers choose not to bother, unless it is a sizable order where the VAT savings add up to a substantial amount worth the effort of claiming it back. When I order from Germany, many sellers seem to think that 100 Euro is a sensible threshold (their VAT is 19%, so 19E savings on a 100E order). Below that, they seem to think that the labor cost for a claim exceeds the benefit to the buyer.

Yes, understood Chris. What I meant was that if it is shipped from England to Austria fpr on-shipping to Australia then it is not going outside the EU from the original shipping - therefore they will have to charge VAT.
As I understand it, it would then be up to Shipito to claim the VAT back etc - yeah right. Perhaps there is some clause where if you can prove that it is shipped to Austria as an interim measure, yadda yadda......going to be too much work and disinterest.
