I have a set of Tesa Isomaster mics up to 100mm size. They are delightful. I bought them dirt cheap on Italian eBay in a flutter of blind faith. I was pretty relieved when they showed up new in their factory wrapping.

My imperial mics are Etalon, Tesa's sister company. Equally good, but they do have a different feel. Both very good. Happy.

The only other mics that I like as much are my Soviet thread mics which I bought from a guy in Kiev. Built like a tank with a very delicate feel to the measuring. Plus its neat having tools with CCCP/USSR on the label. The peace dividend is living in my tool box!

My godfather, where have I been? For the past 20 years, I've been in the engineering game, with all the precision tools at my disposal. No need to buy anything, until now, retired.

You fellas amaze with all the gear you have. Some of the stuff that the Chairman of Board has, just blows me away. It's enough to make a man reach for the medicine fridge.

I have a lot of catching up to do.

Notice how often that flutter is accompanied by a sheen of nervous sweat.

Yup. I don't do it often. Those Isomasters, and the first time I bought from that guy in Ukraine, and the rotary table (which is sitting on the docks as I write-should have it next week. That only took a year!)

I just passed on an allegedly smoking deal on a vertex dividing head with Bison chuck because the seller seemed to stupid to be worth it. Sometimes objects aren't worth the heartache.

Ken, my collection took three years. It's a matter of wanting the best gear at the cheapest prices. You have to troll PomBay, YankBay and the rest to find the best deals. I am sure that I have never paid more than half the price of a new Chinese tool for any of my Swiss or German things. Often a lot less. There's always another deal around the corner too, so no need to go crazy bidding for stuff. (I think I bid on 20 Starrett 199's before I scored mine for $160. I think that was on some US holiday when there were 9 of them on ebay.)

There are other sources too, but I'll say more about them when I have a complete set (still need a schnelltaster)

See? There's apparently an endless supply of cool German/Swiss/Austrian do-dads that are just too cool to ignore. Last year I bought a 3D taster from Franz Haimer after bidding on a dozen or more. The schnelltaster thing has my attention right now owing to their usefulness for those bores requiring less than 0.0001" accuracy.

These things are like our Mahr indicators...Just that little bit more...more...precise somehow.

I had an inkling. Taster is tester and schnell is fast.

As a boy, my brothers and I were roused from our sleep with the old man calling out " Alles aus steigen schnell raus ". It was his early morning wake up call whilst a guest at Stalag XIII C. He never forgot it and neither have we.

Your Dad probably heard my Dad dropping greetings from his Lancaster over Schweinfurt and other nearby locales. Dad saw the war out in the RCAF the whole time.

Bob, my tatser is sitting in Frankfurt right now. My Rivett owning mate's wife is flying over there Tuesday, she'll drag it back with her next month. (I've found that German ebay sellers are often willing to sell to me, but not ship ex-Germany. It just means a short delay for me (I didn't want to impose on the elderly mother to post it to me.)

Ah Ha. So it's in the blood Gregory.

Edit. I type with one thumb so you beat me. That was a comment about you and your Dad.

And his Dad in biplanes, so yeah, third generation. Probably the last too, although my youngest daughter shows an unhealthy interest.

For your clear plastic, you can buy a special acrylic plastic rejuvenator stuff called "plexus" in a spray can. Plexus Plastic Cleaner (Aerosol). Having just done a quick search there are lots of other brand products available as well.
I bought mine from Nolans Nolan UDA - Home in Newcastle a couple of years ago. Its not listed on their website but I assume they would still stock it. Not cheap, I think about $17/can at the time
At the time I owned a Bolwell Nagari which had moulded acrylic 1/4 windows which, being over 30 years old had quite a lot of micro scratches etc. This stuff I bought is great, after using it it was like I'd fitted new windows. Its also great on polycarbonate headlights. Just spray it on, a quick polish and wipe it off.

I knew nothing about Schweinfurt and it's importance during WW2. For those who are interested, this is an informative article.
