User opinions requested re H&F BS-5V horizontal bandsaw
In the '80s I bought a Hafco RF-115 horizontal bandsaw (an early version of the now ubiquitous "4 x 6" type horizontal bandsaw), and both of us are getting old and tired so it's time for a change to something with less weight and a smaller footprint in the cramped shed.
So I am looking at the BS-5V B004 - BS-5V Portable Swivel Head Metal Cutting Band Saw | Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse as a replacement which is a bit smaller and a lot lighter than what I have, and it would be good to hear user experience from those who own or use a BS-5V or similar.
Some things that have gone through my mind:
1. The BS-5V as supplied needs hand feeding on every cut, but I usually hand-feed the old RF-115 anyway, because typically I cut an assortment of thicknesses/ materials and it's not worth fiddling with the settings for trouble free no-hands operation.
2. Half of my cuts with the RF-115 are in vertical bandsaw mode, so I need to consider if the BS-5V can be altered to allow the frame to stand vertical when needed. In practice this alteration would also involve changing switching from trigger to on-off, and stabilising the machine so it does not fall back when set vertical, but those are easy enough to do.
3. I have never set up coolant on the RF-115, but should I wish to do that with the BS-5V there may be a problem with keeping the coolant away from the motor/electrics when you let the handle go and the frame flips up. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Is misting an option here?
Looking around I found some other possible saw choices like this Japan-made Asada saw https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/barn...saw/1232749766 (- an angle vice version can be purchased new for $$$ but I am not sure about variable speed), and I found a saw this: https://www.forestwest.com.au/metal-...justable-speed which is less cost but has a 400W motor vs the 1kW of the BS-5V. It's hard to know if the motor power difference is relevant to me: my old RF-115 has been working happily for decades on an ancient 1/4hp English Electric motor (less than 200W), but in any event I do place some value in the BS-5V being sourced from Taiwan.
Any thoughts on this will be valued. I have a brief opportunity to get a somewhat reduced price on the BS-5V.
Cheers,
Bill
