Hunch what year or model Deckel do you have? I think the spindle oil only is applicable to the early models which had bronze bearings in the vertical head. The later versions had needle rollers running in grease. The magic stuff there is Kluber Isoflex NBU 15, no oil required.

PS, I can send you some Kluber if you ever need some. Its not obtainable normally in small lot quantities. For an idea of its use, my three lathe spindle bearings take a total of 7 g of grease at installation.

That's funny: On the South Bend lathe forums there have been posts about using compressor oil instead of Velocite. Those guys are also big fans of Mobil One synthetic engine oil though, and something called Marvel Mystery Oil.

    Default good choice

i agree that stuff is handy. Something like crc tac2. The open gear oils is available in a spay pack to. it seems a little thicker its also designed for gears.. On the down side is a darker colour. lately ive been using dupont lithium grease with teflon. Mainly because i have a lot of it and it only cost$2.50 a can

Yeah Greg I use compressor oil in my spindles. It was the closest I could find in spec to the "real" oil in the small quantities needed. Even a 1 l container lasts a loooong time, 20 l would last me about the same number of lifetimes!

    It's a 4, 92ish....maybe.

Slightly annoying those folk from Munich wouldn't update the requirements to reflect the change, thought they'd always been needle.

Thanks for the kind offer of the grease too. Please send a small IED instead if I'm ever tempted to delve into the innards of this thing as well!

Suppose as long as the wedge is formed, just about anything will work. Sounds a bit snake oil, but did note MMO was being sold by one of the GA mobs down Moorabbin(?) way a few years back...assumed it was primarily assembly lube, going by the consistency.

Ah a 4! I think they may even be modern angular contact type. I know the FP1 roller type are difficult as hell to rebuild because the races are permanent and the mechanic has to try different sized rollers to get the spindle back to factory spec.

But then again a Porsche 550 of that era required 40 hours to assemble the crankshaft.

I have somewhere an old poster for MMO with I think a Lockheed Vega in the background.
