Default Vertical feed on the Douglas

I had to clean up the ends of some cast blocks for a forum member today. They are lapping blocks for sharpening blades...or something
This required some fairly long vertical cuts so I thought I would set up the ratchet feed mechanism on the vertical feed shaft. It already had the taper pin hole in the shaft.
The only thing was, as the table moves up the feed mechanism rod becomes too long which meant that I had to periodically stop the machine and shorten up the rod.
Gotta say it worked a treat.

Nifty. Should I get around to using my Douglas again I'll keep that trick in mind.

    Thank you Phil.

    Nice thinking Phil.

My Z shaft comes out the other side of the knee.....no doing that for me.

Whats with the paper between the pieces? Help to even out any little inconsistencies?

    Cheers,

    Thanks Bob,
It wouldn't work with the pawl on the top because as the table rose up the pawl mechanism moves closer to the crossfeed screw.
After that happens it can get real nasty

    Thanks Ewan,
The bits of paper were used to stop the jaws marking and the pieces marking each other.
They also provide a bit of grip so they stayed together when I turned them around and did the other end.
You should know that there 'will be no inconsistencies' with a shaper

    Hi Joe,
'April'...as usual my memory is next to useless but I am sure I would have watched that before.
I wasn't saying I invented vertical feed, it was just that I had looked at the taper pin hole that was already there and thought one day I'll connect that up.
The opportunity finally arrived so I thought I would post it and highlight a few of the anomalies that go with the vertical feed.
It may also explain why they didn't pre drill the hole on later models.
With the table wound right over it reminded me that the bevel gears are seriously in need of replacement

    A memoryless Phil

Some shapers have this option, and it looks like the Douglas was designed with this in mind. The position of the table lift operating shaft is perfect.
A downside is the loss of the ability to use the table support bracket, but it looks to be working OK with light cuts.

I found my old camcorder the other day with heaps of stuff on it. Still on it as I had no way of downloading to the computer...so I thought. I had the usual cables for the TV and a USB cable but just couldn't see where to plug the USB cable into.
Really, why would you read the instructions . Up the other end of the camera and not under the rubber cover that hides all the plug holes for cables I located the USB port.
On the camera is the footage I took of screwcutting the vertical square thread for the Douglas. It is 20mm with I think 3 mm Pitch. Yeah I know, Metric, but I had a piece of 20mm shaft and that meant I didn't have to buy anything. I also had a small piece of brass for the nut.
Anyways, I downloaded the footage if anyone is interested. It's screwcutting using the travelling steady.

Very nice Phil, is the tool just HSS ground to shape? Whatever it is it is cutting well.

    Thanks Ewan,
I cut this thread back in August 2011. Yup, thats how long it's been on the camera,
If I remember correctly, I used a piece of 1/2" HSS and ground it to shape over to one side including the lead angle and flat across the top, ie square to the lead angle.
For the nut I have a very small boring bar that uses 1/8" HSS and ground it down to 3mm.
I reckon a correct setup is the key.
Here is a pic of them installed on the Douglas.
