Pretty sure its just a makie lacquer finish on Japanese red elm/keyaki, so i'll either use urushi lacquer and ground gold powder, or else some sort of varnish or shellac with pigments and gold leaf

Is that different from urushi used on saya? On a side note urushi is toxic.

Just a thought - producing a crusty black barrel may be difficult (the black crusty bit - making a shiny barrel is easy). It sounds like the main thing that you want to do is the stock and decoration, so is it worth doing the barrel in say clear acrylic (machining will make it frosty). This may also mean that the replica is classed as a toy - therefore no licence. The barrel could still have the shape but would look more display like.

Pretty sure its one and the same in most cases, though what's used on saya varies depending on the finish required. I know full well how unpleasant it is to work with...i've done it before, hence why shellacs or other finishes are looking more tempting at the moment anyway
