Default What do you think of this vise?

Masters Hardware have this vise for $93.75 which looks to me to be good buying. Gearwrench appears to be made on Taiwan.

In my case it would only be for occasional use and nothing like the workhorse that a real metalworker would need.

What do you think of it please?

I finally got around to getting a Gearwrench Tap & Die set from Masters, and this is still in transit (arrives today I think).
I thought it was pretty good buying at $148 (significantly less than at Gasweld), but when I went to get the link just now, the priced has dropped to only $111
    https://www.masters.com.au/product/1...l-set-75-piece

    Bugger!

Also picked up a 3/8 Socket set (again Masters) which was really good buying for $90 (that is, $1 per piece!):
    https://www.masters.com.au/product/1...t-set-90-piece

Most stores are sold out of that one so I asked a forum member and he very kindly picked up one for for me. Should arrive tomorrow.

    Looks OK to me...

It is not ye-olde Sidchrome quality, but it is not ye olde Sidchrome price either..

I think it should give good service for occasional use...

I bought two chinese tap and die sets years ago.. One metric, one UNC/UNF... Quality is not amazing, but I replace the ones that wear out quickest from lots of use with higher quality taps/dies, and the odd ones that never seem to get used, save my rectum when they are needed..

    Default gear wrench

hi mate looks ok. Ive herd gear wrench is a good brand. I had one of there telescopic pry bars.
I really liked it and i really gave it a good test and it was up for the heavy work that i do.
the tap and die set looks like a copy of the snap on one my brother has.
If you dont like it take it back. but i think you will be right. Plus you made a good buy/s

    Cant help on the vice.
There are some interesting threads in that tap set, though you never know. Depending on the thread chart they could be second or third choice(or not at all). But you'll be laughing the day you need a M9x1mm

    Default sizes

Well spotted stu i didn't notice all those sizes. Funny hay .A fair few wasted tools.
you never know they might catch on.
If the tap and die wrenches are reasonable quality I think its sill not to bad of a buy.
    depending on them.
I brought some tti tap wrenches that where terrible i defiantly couldnt
    recommend them.

I would never buy a new vise.

    Better off getting a s/h Dawn - 5" is a nice size.

Generally go for $40 - 50 on Gumtree.

Some of the imports have cheesy leverage bars.

For a new vice I think it would be fine, but I have to agree with Rob there are normally plenty on gumtree, or at least there seem to be here.
One problem though, where the hell will you put it?

Apparently not, judging by this website:
    http://mytools.co.nz/products/gearwr...in-150mm-fixed

Pretty exxy over the ditch too.

Is there any advantage of cast iron over steel or v.v.?

Nope, definitely cast iron - Masters are just inconsistent with their info:
    https://www.masters.com.au/product/1...ers-vice-100mm

which says that the 4" version is

    • Quick action thread
    • Replaceable hardened steel jaws
    • High quality forging using HT230 cast iron

    Hi Brett,

Have a look on Gumtree for a second hand Dawn vise and see how the prices compare

I recently swapped my chinese swivel vise for a blacksmith style leg vise on one workbench. I don't think I'll be going back to the swivel vise anytime soon..

Hi Ray, unless I'm missing something, I don't think the Gearwrench is a swivel - just a round base - looks that way to me anyway, and no mention of swivel.

I will have a look around Gumtree though.

    This part is interesting:
"Steel handle is designed to bend before the vice is overstressed"

I wonder if that is something that you guys know about, or whether it's just excusing what is known to be a soft handle?
