Ropetangler, I have replied via PM as I don't want this thread to go off at a tangent.

    Default Paint stripped

Tonight I pulled some of the bench grinder parts out of the caustic bath. The paint is all gone only to reveal a good coating of rust over most of the parts.

when I bought the grinder the photo showed surface rust, and when I picked it up from Geelong the house was in view of the sea....Lucky I only paid $30 for it

looks like I am going to have to build an electrolyse bath this week end.

    Cheers

Default Grinding wheels what grit to use

While I was on the Sandpaper Mans web site looking for belts for my linisher, I noticed some 200x40 Norton aluminium oxide grinding wheels to suit the "carbide" grinder. What grit is better for grinding tool steel 46 or 60.

    Cheers

I use a blue Norton #46 for grinding my HSS (also from The Sandpaperman) and it works very well.

Can't compare to the #60 as I haven't used that grit.

46 is pretty much good for most jobs. 60 is a bit to fine side for most thing a typical grinder would be put to use for.

Thanks for the reply's. The sandpaper man also recommended the blue norton but he does not list one for a 25mm shaft. I will give him a call.

Why blue? Dunno, that's what The Sandpaperman was offering at the time at a special price, so I bought one to try.

Some more opinions here, I think they influenced me to buy one.
