Waldown 8SN purchase
All
Here are pics of my latest purchase. $200 at swap meet in canberra. I thought about refurbishing but it seemed to clean up ok. Have to track down proper looking switch (440v) and will try to braze broken lock collar casting. I don't think I will try to fix holes in table - will leave well enough alone!

Hello Dave,
Nice drill.
I knew I had a photo saved of an original 440volt switch. I just found it. Bit neater than the lunch boxes they fitted to late model drills. The drill below belongs to forum member Melbourne Matty.

Nice
many thanks. A neat little switch. I will keep my eye out for something respectable. The GMF 3 phase 8" bench grinder that went off on Ebay this week for $100 ( from memory) had an identical switch. For one mad moment I contemplated buying it for the switch then realised that I would then have a perfectly good bench grinder that needed a nice switch.

Hi Dave,
I picked up a short 8sn some months ago, they are beautiful drills to use. I see you have a high speed Waldown already so i guess you know the quality.
Hows the Dainichi (I think thats right...my memory is foggy) coming along? I can see her lurking in the background there......
Cheers,

Thanks for offer on locking collar. Chances are 50:50 on a successful braze job but I will give it my best.

Yes, quality of Waldown drills very pleasing on all aspects in my view. I wish Oz could still make this stuff. Castings are really nice, shapes are really nice, details (like big scalloped hand knob) are nicely thought out and of course, tolerances give great confidence.
I also have the little high speed Waldown NH - not sure will get much use but is a thing of beauty!
As for Dainichi, warmer weather will allow painting to progress. Have 3 phase onto shed now so multiple projects will proceed - reinstall 3 phase motors on Hercus and Douglas shaper, co-locate Waldown drills near 3phase points and begin wiring the Dainichi.
