The one on the front is magnetic, it wont stay "ON" if the power goes off while you are using it, with overload. With a VSD you wont need it.
Some of the guys here are currently trying out 2hp VSDs that cost about $80. I assume 2hp is about what you're after? 1hp gets down to around $55. At that price plugs and sockets are a fair chunk of the cost. Depending on exactly what you have in mind you might be better off with something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ROTARY-SW...item3ce4700808
The fourth pole lets you switch the vsd controls.
My box uses two like these stacked into one.

Stu,
I'm currently trying to figure out the exact model of each grinder and find a photo of the Motor label. It seems that they are not all create equal.
I'm pretty sure the old one is a Waldown Series TT 8" grinder 3Ph.
0.5 HP 415V 0.9Amps 2,800RPM
This also cam in a 1Hp version, but mine is only 0.5Hp
Still figuring out the Newer one.
Based on a 0.5HP those cheap 1HP VSD sound good. Where do I source them??
What is the difference between a VSD & VFD??…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

The current range are 0.75KW FYI
P.S. The switch on the front of this one is the switch on the back of mine..…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

VFD= variable frequency drive/device = VSD = variable speed device/drive
The last photo in post #16 identifies the motor as a definite Star-wound motor. THe other photos show the iside to be identically constructed to my Waldown NH drill motor. I have converted that to Delta and found it easy to do, but the star point was tucked in and took a little finding.
The suitable 0.75kW VFDs Stu mentioned are available from:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/VFD-f...848691318.html or
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/VFD-E...700575191.html
and other Aliexpress suppliers.
I would now recommend not to choose the better looking HT1000 because we found problems with the firmware design which make that one difficult to use with a grinder (in my view).
The newer HT2000 could be OK.Cheers,
Joe

No two. The others are photos from the net. Actually one photo was from the market place on here.
Correction: I have two Waldowns & a secondhand worn out no name chinese grinder that needs new bearings which would probably cost more than the grinder did.
Also I did consider the base being turned around when I photographed the wiring, so I tend to agree with you on that.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

Well I got a parcel today won't go into detail about the posty & idiots at the post office. I'll skip to the interesting bit.
I got two VFDs from the links above. Don't be fooled by the photos they show which look like new. I got some well used ones, no attempt to even clean them at all.
So my next step is to figure out how to fit & connect these. I did request English instructions but got none at all.
Thanks to the help of Joe walking me through it the two grinders are now Delta and ready for the VFDs .…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands
