Waldown Super Sensitive High Speed Drilling Machine.
This little machine now resides in my shed after spending many years neglected down the back of a factory in Somerton. It should clean up nicely and it is all there except for the pulleys for the lower speed range and the JT0 chuck. I have an old 1/2hp Lenze VFD that may allow me to run it at lower speeds but I won't know until I complete a Delta conversion of the 1/2hp 3phase motor.

Hi Techo,
Congratulations on the purchase, looks like you got a good one, in near perfect condition.
With the VFD, you might not need the low speed pulley set, although the torque will be lower, the drill sizes are going to be smallish anyway, so a bit less torque might not matter so much.

You lucky ba........... It is always a great thing to see a neglected or not so neglected machine end up in appreciative hands.
Enjoy it.

Great find - they are little treasures.
Had my y-fronts in a twist wondering how I missed it till I realised it was the Somerton in Oz not the one just up the road from me here in the UK.
MarkWhat you say & what people hear are not always the same thing.

if you need the diminsions for the low speed pulleys, I can help
I've got one, it's older, but the motor speed should be the same (2850)
It's fitted with the 3000/6000 pulley set
I'm happy to measure them up if you need the dimensions

Thanks for the offer John, I would like to have that information available if the VFD conversion does not prove to be effective. Does yours have the 4 step pulleys that will go from 3 to 12000 RPM? All I need really is the outside diameter of each step on the pulley to save me having to calculate.
Here is the machine running at 18000RPM on 415 volt 3 phase.

Low speed pulley dimensions
The two step spindle pulley is 1.50 and 2.75 inches, motor pulley is 3.25 inches (nominal sizes ?).
Spindle pulley is "fixed", the motor pulley has a knurled retaining nut, speed change is just a matter of flipping the motor pulley over so it aligns with either top or bottom splindle pulley.
All pulleys are crowned, just look like a simple straight taper from the edges to the centre, edge diameters being about 50 thou smaller.
Pulley width is about 0.82 inches, flat fabric belt looks to be 3/4" nominal.
These measurements seem to yield 3368 and 6175 rpm with a 2850 rpm motor, with a bit of slip I guess this is near enough to 3000/6000 rpm

Thanks for that information John, yours must be a different model as mine requires 4 step pulleys to achieve the lower speeds.
Today I pulled the motor apart and located the star point.
