Waldown Vice
Hi,
I picked up a Waldown Drill Vice yesterday at the local markets (I was there to buy work shorts but couldn't resist buying it).
As you can see the handle has been replaced with a valve from somewhere and one side has suffered some damage. Also, one of the clamping bolts on the underside is missing.
I'm going to turn up a new handle but I'm not sure of the required length, if anyone has one the dimensions would be appreciated (the length of the handle and the two knobs).
The damage to the side I'm not sure if it's worth trying to fix. Maybe weld some material onto it and then machine in down? Or just machine the channel a bit deeper? Any suggestions?
Cheers
Ben

Ben,
I have one with a characterless handle. I can measure it for you but it may be a couple of days before I venture up to the shed. If you are prepared to wait I can even measure the hold down clamps Waldown provided for the vice.

Hi,
Bob that would be really good. Not worried about the time frame, it will be another project that I've got to do.
It cost me $40. I didn't go out looking for it but couldn't resist it, I probably should of haggled the seller but was pretty happy with the price. The missus gave me a bemused look, went to buy shorts and came back with another vice (how many do I need she asked?).

Hi Ben & Bob,
I have the same vice. Until recently it has been my only vice to use for milling (Got a vertex for my birthday!) and I have been on the hunt (on and off) for a second one but they don't seem that common. Mine has what appears to be the original handle but who would know. It also has a tilting mechanism which can be removed.
I missed the bit about the handle until after I took the photo. Can send another pic of the handle later...

This is what the handle looks like on mine. It can slide up and down, not very interesting at all and I wouldn't even know if it's original. Bob, you would probably know....

Here are a few photos of mine. The handle is 10mm in diameter, its overall length is 144.2mm and between the "nuts", 126.7mm. The 12.7mm AF nuts are a touch more subtle than those on Simon's handle. They appear to have been ball turned.
I've included a sketch of a hold down clamp should any body wish to make something similar.

Ooooh I have seen a set of those hold downs floating around the shed minus the bolts. I didn't know they went with the Waldown vise.

Hi Bob,
Well your vice is a lovely example of the Waldown vice we all have. Thanks so much for posting the hold down clamps. I have been meaning to make a set. Since I have your drawings, I may as well make them similar to those....
PS I suppose you're going to tell me you made those jaws?

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the pictures, dimensions and the "sketch". I'm in the process of cleaning the vice at work at the moment. Once that's done I will turn up a handle. The clamps will be a project for the future. I also think I seen something similar to the clamps at work someplace, I'll have a look around on Monday.
Thanks Ben.

Nup.
I had just finished the Dulux refurb of the 3M when a South Australian Ebay seller listed a new Waldown vice. I was the second highest bidder.. The seller contacted me and offered me another vice. He said it had been used a couple of times. I bought it. It came with the loose jaw and clamps. I think I paid about $130 ish.
