    Default This week in Edinburgh

Work has sent me off to visit head office in Edinburgh. While here I ducked into the main museum and tried to find something of interest. Only a couple of steam based models. Apologies in advance for the poor photos but through the glass with no flash...

These are beautifully made models - how could you dream of cutting them apart (although it does help explain how they work).

    Michael,

You've rekindled my Rocket interest. Thank you.

When you are there next, hold the lens hard up against the glass when the museum guard is looking elsewhere. Works perfectly for flash free, reflection free close ups.

    Hi Michael,
    Thanks for the pictures.
The tripple expansion engine had me scratching my head for awhile before I realized three of the cylinders are valves(though I'm thinking Phil will have another name for them)

The cut away models are driven too so you can see the wheels going around (I wish they had cut away steam in them though...). I'll see how I go. I'm here until Sunday, so I might be able to get back there.

I didn't get back for more photos, but I did find this book in a bookshop

Not a bad read (kept me busy on the flight back). It's around 340 pages and explains valve gear, boiler construction, wheels and all the other things that make a steam loco tick. Certainly enough in there for you to appreciate what goes into one.
