Weldsmart Oxy Acetylene kit. Any Good?
The cost is only half the price of a BOC basic kit.
Has anyone used one before or know of any problems?
Cheers

Hi Peter,
While I am not familiar with that specific bit of equipment, I would make a guess and say its probably modeled on the original Comet 3 .
I know a liscensed gas fitter who repairs all manner of oxy fuell gas and heating equipment, explain the the Comet 3 was one of the very best ever made. This was due to the fact that the design incorporated stainless seats and high qulaity design which allowed relaitively easy repairs.
Not only did it meet the Australian standards ,but exceeded them by a big margin.
Many of the clones are just Comet 3 look alikes and do not have all the the unseen safety features. They barely meet Australian standards. When the brumby brands give trouble the do s big time.
There have been some accidents and incidents merely because of the a user attaching a brand X cutting head. Brand X was not made to the same tolerances as the comet and exploded as it was being used.Iunderstand here were legal actions between Cigweld and BOC when they became differnt entities
The other way to go is to seek a good second hand set unit. Much cheaper!
Cheers
Grahame

Thanks for the info.
Its not a brand x. Its supplied by a company called Weldsmart in Perth W.A. and made in Australia.
If you believe the comet to be the only standard then yes it is a brand x.
Any other infact would be brand x.
The fact that it is cheaper than a BOC basic kit has to ring some alarm bells.
A trade person would not think twice about a torch because it would be used a lot more than
I would need.
A retailer told me that he has a japanese hand piece at home that is over 15 years old and works like a charm.
He also wants to sell me a $600.00 kit thats not even BOC.
Again
Thanks for the ifo.
Regards
Peter.

Hi there.
I own a Weldsmart Oxy Kit. I must say I had never heard of the brand either and wasn't expecting much for a complete kit for under $300 while other ompanies want $500 + (for what seems to be the same thing.) . The quality is fine and meets + exceeds the required standards. They are a large company with several branches south of the river in WA.
I bought online at www.westozwelding.com and picked up from their showroom. The only problem was I got there after 4.00pm and they had shut-up-shop!!
Who closes at 4.00 o clock.. seriously !
- there is a number on the website, I do have a mobile contact somewhere but cannot remember where I left the business card. His name was Dan from memory.
