I'll take some tomorrow if that's not too soon! The vee's and all machined surfaces are still masked up to minimise re-rusting, well, I hope it has.

Happy New Year Stupots and all members,

    Default Final shots of bed

Here are a couple more shots of the painted lathe bed. As mentioned earlier, I've left the blue masking tape on for now.

Chris is right. When the leadscrew is in place, it obscures the logo. I don't gaze at the shittyjob done by the factory on mine. Here's some more info that maybe of interest. I simply searched for "painting raised letters on machinery".

    Painting Raised Letters

I tried exactly this on the shapers lettering which I had not yet finished, it worked a treat. I just have to touch up the grey around it a bit.

I came across an interesting idea for electrolysis on larger items on the "usinges" forum BT pointed me to for vernier info. A member w is restoring an acera mill, and to clean the table he put several layers of paper towel on the table, soaked the paper in electrolyte and the put a sheet of steel over the paper as the anode. I can see a computer PSU in the pics so I guess he was cranking a fair few amps.

    Default Lathe bed assembly

Stop yawning, admit you've been keen following my Hercus restoration project with great interest. No? Better than watching grass grow.

Today I re-assembled the bed, ie, bolted the feet back on and the rack.

I'm still concerned with the cosmetic look of the bed ways. I popped a post in PM in the States, looking for additional ideas.

Remove rust stains from lathe bed

It seems that using Avapo-rust is the go. The rust stains in the vee ways are actually embedded in the casting, so short of a re-grind, it seems that Evapo-rust may just get into these areas, and leech them out.

No more boring snaps, 'cept this one. You can put the tissues away now and stop sobbing..

Incidently, I tried brasso with steel wool, no go, then Brasso with fine emery, no go, and lemon juice, no go.

    Default scraping

I hate to say this Ken. But I think the only method of getting that "AS NEW" shiny look , is by scraping the ways

Have you got a camel back straight edge you can check the ways with ? The bed may need scraping anyway ?

    Default No Camel back

The only camel around here is me when I hang on too long.

I have absolutely no idea about scraping, so that's probably out. The only scraping I've done is the baking dish.

I'll try everything else first, but thanks for the suggestion.

    Ken
