Thread: Wohlhaupter UPA5-S6

Thanks Michael for sending me some literature, unfortunately it doesn't really help me, there is a parts breakdown but for a UPA3.

Anyway, here she is, decked out with a 42mm endmill holder. Yes, i did the unthinkable and machined down the MT5 shank. Mostly because there would be no easy way to get a drawbar into the head itself, MT5 being M20 and the NT40 being 16mm. That and i lost about 100mm of Z with the adapter. Not a problem for using it vertical but it would mean big problems for horizontal use.

See if you can get the facing feed to work.
if it doesn't it probably is the feed screw lock pin and spring.

The feed screw locking spring is the one i'm missing.....It all seems to work fine, all 12 feed pins engage and disengage fine, it feeds fine. Beats me where the spring and pin belongs....

G'day Ewan, I was given a UPA-4 with a Deckel taper which is useless to me and have considered machining it down to 1" straight shank. I'd be curious to know how you went about machining the shank on your head and if it was particularly difficult? I've had this head just sitting there for about 18 months and it would have been really handy on a few occasions so with you as inspiration I reckon I'll bite the bullet and get it done. I've got some Wolhaupter manuals at home I can send you though they are all from the web so you might have them already. I figure I''ll need to strip mine to machine the shank so I can do this too if it helps. Cheers, Greg.

I machined the shank in the 4 jaw with a live center in the outer end. I still had it in bits so it was just the shank/top half of the head. I spent a fairly long time making sure the TIR was better than .001" at either end and then machined it off. It was as hard as all get out, but with small DOC's and carbid i got it done fine. The hardening stopped about 1/2" from the shoulder. I didn't take much off mine, i used a 42mm endmill holder, which meant the machining started at pretty much nothing. One the machining was dome i cut it top length.
If you do pull yours right down i'd love to know where the extra's i have go....
Between my searching and Michael i think i have all the manuals that are out there.
