I recently spotted a built up LED tacho module on Ebay for about $12.00, just need to add a photo sensor and power supply, I have one on order and should be here around the end of the month.
    Rob,
I run a D.C. motor and KBMM controller on my lathe and it works a treat.

Which sensor did you wire into it and do you have a diagram, thanks.

    G'Day,
After playing with a few sensors ,settled on the Omron EE-SPY 312, Diagram attached, see previous posts for photo. Power supply is a regulated 12 volt D.C. 1 Amp (ex telephone answering machine).

Hi Martin, is the 302 the same as the 312 that you used, thanks Shane.

    G'Day Shane,
The SPY 302 and 312 are electrically identical, the only difference is the mounting holes,
    Regards,
    Martin

Setup the Omron EE-SPY reflective sensor and am most impressed, dead stable, almost instant response, no need for a sector plate, just a bit of black electrical tape on the spindle,(will add a stripe of black paint eventually). Hookup dead easy, it needed a pullup resistor, the case is from Jaycar, cut in half so you get 2 for the $18.00. Total cost tacho $12.00, sensor $9.25, case $9.00. not bad for $30.00 all up. Have fun playing with your versions.
    Regards,
    Martin
Hi Martin, just one more silly question, the black tape, does it cover 1/2 the circumference of the shaft, thanks Shane.

I finally got around to assembling my tacho. I used the same setup as shown in Martin's circuit above, only I substituted a 10K resistor for RL. I'm running 22v and 200 ohms seemed a bit low. I've only tried it with the sensor (Omron EE-SPY312) held in my hand, but it works very well. These optical sensors seem very tolerant of mounting distance and surface finish. To test mine I simply wrapped a strip of black electrical tape half way around the body of my ER40 collet.

I also found an eBay seller who sells the special sockets for connecting the EE-SPY series of sensors. $3.99 for 2 of them with free postage. Search eBay for "E1001".

    Chris
