What sort of price are you expecting for a Douglas shaper and vice,or just for the vice.

I am expecting to pay around the same as I just paid for a shaper but with an original vice. I really don't expect to find a vice by itself.

BTW for anybody on the far east coast FOR SALE BY TENDER - Excess School Equipment and Furniture

Only a couple of days to go until the tender process closes.

18 inch is a good all round size, but they are always heavy unlike the little Douglas shapers. The Douglas shapers are better for smaller jobs where the larger ones will surface large plate and take decent cuts. One thing to think about is what you will be doing with it, things like dovetails on a Douglas will be limited to around 9 1/2 - 10 inches.

Also most shapers will do a cube of there stated size, so a 18 inch shaper will do a 11 inch cube, so they can also take a 11 inch high job.

As for the vise it's no luxury, you really need a shaper vise as they are usually lower profile than a mill vise and usually bolt down with 4 bolts instead of 2.The shaper vises are also usually reverse to a mill vise, with having the lead screw bearing point at the fixed jaw end, so it pulls the jaws together instead of pushing the movable jaw only.

I was expecting up around $200 for a vise, but am now looking for another shaper as I have a project in mind for the rest of it. I will wait until I get another one around $450 again. Still kicking myself over the $450 BIN shaper on ebay last year, my wife was going to Sydney at the time and I could of just thrown the trailer on and gone with her. I did contact him about the vise but he wouldn't separate it which was fair enough. It was even the same colour as the one I already have.LOL

    Welcome to the forum
We all love pictures, sounds like a nice machine. Not sure about the over 60 bit, I still have 16 years to get their, LOL
Was it a ebay deal or did you pick it up privately?

I have a Alba 24 inch shaper I picked up for $300 which was a great deal of a guy on a farm. While I was there I picked up a horizontal mill as well because he mentioned it, I need to stop buying thing when people offer them. LOL.

We have a shaper thread going here if you don't want to start a thread about yours.

    Default First shaper revelation

Mister jhovel, first time I saw shaper was as young man in small, overhead belted machine shop in Pembroke, Ontario, and old fella (yikes, maybe like me!) bored out tubing weldment I had made for slip on ramp front sight to conceal ugly muzzle of .303 carbine (after removing flash hider) I was busy trying to make sporting rifle out of. He turned on ancient, large shaper to answer my query. Quiet, inexorable, and dignified, like my grandpa!
I lurked around ebay for >3 years looking in Adelaide area and finally spotted ad for slotting machine, too big, no use for, but by damn, I got one now! In the fullness of time I'm going to know how to use it too.

Dave J. Well, I sure as hell don't wanna start thread about mine! (my wife'd soon burst that balloon) But I paid $900 (with big vise) and $300 to move about 30 minutes away. Truckee was excellent, and used a tilt tray truck. My thought is that in Adelaide, best grab opportunity as long as you reckon you won't take too big a bath if you just pass it on 3 months later. Best thing I read last weekend, was the expression (from a yank) "that's price of being me".

Nice, with swivel table as well. From what I can see no power down feed?
They take up a good chunk of room. How many HP is it?

I ended up picking up a nice shaper vise from Sydney for $150, but it's good you got one with yours as it's probably the same brand.

Steve has posted here not so long ago about his machines, I will go so far but not that far..Having them that clean would make me not want to use them.

I see a mill hiding around the corner and a good size lathe over the back corner, you will have to post a few pictures in the lathe and mill threads tomorrow and let us know more about them as well if you don't mind.

Anyway welcome again to the forum, it looks like your pretty well set up there for machines. If you haven't already noticed we have a great bunch of members here with knowledge on just about everything, and everyone is willing to help out.

Great score. And welcome aboard. I reckon if you only have one shaper, might as well get the biggest bastard you can find - especially if like me you don't have a mill. I wanted to make a 500mm straight edge the other day, but my shaper will only do 450. Not all of us are old farts either.

I don't think age has anything to do with tool envy. I am not yet half as old as 60 and this thread (well actually most of this forum) makes me green....

Just remember, your only as old as the woman you feel, or in our case maybe the machine you feel (which in the case of my lathe would double my age- and i'll be even older with the LeBlond)

Please show us some more pics, i like pics. (more envy)

    Ewan
