Joe, thanks for the message,
At the asking price I will put my hand up for it myself.
Besides; 8km to home with it is not a real big road trip.
Just told the missus that I will get it...... and the reply was "What are you going to do with your old one?"
Just leave it bolted down in the corner of the workshop.
I also suggested to her that if we move I can put a good 3m square slab down; fit the macson on it then erect a garden shed around it. Make a good chip containment that way. Might sound like a hailstorm though.

jhovel, Not used to the somewhat cryptic remarks yet, but I understand that Ken (aka Toggy) will buy the Macson shaper previously shown by RayG. I certainly don't need more restoration projects but looked like basically sound unit rusting away. My original note was to try to let you know you should search under "slot*" etc as well as shaper as the one I bought was listed under slotter and didn't show up in my chronic "shaper" searches.
I also have very beat-up Mit-a-Mit travelling head shaper, or major parts thereto. Would appreciate any steering comments or information on this unit so I can restore as well.

RayG-Naw, I don't think like that. I can understand trying to get original gear back together. This is real everyday history and I'm mech engineer, whose rellies, after 35 years, don't understand my livelihood.
I don't think it has auto downfeed, but not sure. Only blank 3" cover plate at front left of ram, no gadgetry, but does have tool lifter on right side of ram.
Can you send pic(s) of the clapper box of your shaper? The one I have was used for slotting only with no clapper included, only a bloody vise. (pics only traded!) I will need to make one.Last edited by rdmntfrd; 1st March 2012 at 11:03 PM. Reason: spelling

Hi rdmntrfd (what's your actual name, please?),
Which remarks did you thinnk were cryptic? I went over all my posts in this thread, they can all be taken at face value. Just one thing possibly wasn't cleartext: Ken went to have a look at the Macson and found that he knew the owner who then suggested Ken buy it. That's why I said 'negotiate with Ken or Ray' - who spotted it first.
Cheers,
Joe
PS: please show us some pictures of your Mit-a-Mit.

Joe's right on the money with his explanation. Yes I know the seller ( he is my ex neighbour of about 10 yrs ago; and I helped him out in his business for a while. This machine is a new addition to those days and I was not aware of it until now.
I have informed him that I will buy it and just waiting for it to dry up a bit before picking it up (171mm in 3 days on flat country. Nearly half of our yearly rainfall)
I am now procrastinating as to whether to sell my 10" Alba and what price. Joe has 1st right of refusal. I will make my mind up after getting the Macson home.

I justy had a phone call form Mackson High School (see Message #18) to say that my tender bid was successful! It's a Douglas.
That makes me a new member of the "Shaper Owners's Club"
Now I have to figure out how to get it down here... Anyone coming from Coffs Harbour or surrounds [Sydney - deleted] to Victoria with a little space and weight (~350kg) capacity spare?
Otherwise it might be a little trip North in a Ute or with a trailer soon.
Cheers,
JoeLast edited by jhovel; 2nd March 2012 at 01:41 PM. Reason: Sorry - Macksville is in NSW but not near Sydney...

I will be, but not for some time yet. If you can find somewhere to stash it until July, I'll bring it down for you. I'd suggest my place in Sydney but that may cause domestic problems unless I was there to take delivery - which I will be in 3 weeks but not with a vehicle.

Sorry - little typo... I meant NSW (Macksville is actually near Coffs Harbour)...
I edited the post, but Peter had already quoted it....

Good to hear you got it Joe, Could I ask how much, or would you like to keep that to yourself. I hate tender sales myself as you never know how high to go.
I cant help you out at the moment, and my truck driving mate just changed jobs to Star Track express, so he cant stopping any more because of the GPS satellite tracking. The old boss didn't mind as long as there was room.
I will ask around to see if I can get it down to even as far as Newcastle or Sydney.

Thinking about it, try some removalest companies down your way and see if it can be picked up on a back load, they would only need a pallet jack or a strong trolley to load it. Often they are coming back empty so are glad to get a bit of money.

Dave,
on the transport thread on this forum is someone from Melbourne going to and from Katoomba next Sunday back Monday. If we can find a way of getting it from Macksville to Sydney he might be able to take it from there.... just a loud thought.

Gd'day Jhovel, my comment was not about your remarks, but about my understanding of the speech norms of the forum. My name is Roger, and I'm a 62 year old canuck who works in downtown Adelaide and suffers a 90 minute daily commute for the sake of a shed and birdsong evenings. The Mit-a-mit is partially disassembled and behind a temporary layer of particle board sheets, so I'll send a few pics after I move them tomorrow. It is Aussie made and missing the table and intermediate shaft, but small enough to move by hand and (I hope) restore. Glad you got your shaper.

Well, its all sorted - I hope.
The shaper will be picked up next Monday and comes via two transport companies via Sydney and Melbourne to my shed - for just over $300. That's less than I would spend in fuel driving the 2600km round trip...
Interestingly, the other quotes I have from TNT and another national carrier were $2700 and $900 respectively.... go figure.
Didn't do any good with removalist's backload - I guess the recent floods have stopped people moving there.
Can't wait to see the thing now.
Oh, the tender that was accepted was $120. I considered the fuel costs of getting it in my bid.

Hi Joe,
You sure move fast. welcome to the shaper club. I suspect that with the sort of projects you are doing the shaper will become an indispensable part of the workshop.
We should be seeing pictures by the end of the week?
Regards
Ray
PS Good price!
