Yesterdays Brain Fart And Todays Project
Last night sitting here at my desk I was thinking how much I hate having no powerfeed on my smaller mill,
Then it struck me (yes the brain fart)
Somewhere in my vast collection of ju....Inventory..I had a 240v spit motor.
Well as quick as it took me to leap off my backside and bolt to the shed things started to become a reality.
Within 5 min I had found the spit motor and wandered over to the mill, The thread on the motor screwed straight into the hand wheel thread, Once powered up the motor drives the the table at a satisfactory speed of around 0.01mm per second at a very constant rate ie;no speed fluctuations(in saying this I have hope that the speed will be controlable via some electrical device to be worked out later)
Now me being me I am not content with just screwing the motor on an leaving it as I then have no easy way to manually controle the table. So me starts to think
OK lets desighn a simple engage disengage system using the dog clutch already on the mill table and the slots in the spit dog for this little sucker............................
I have started, I have photo's, BUT.. I have only just run into the house for a quick cuppa sandwich and a ciggy...
So more to come this arvo...........STAY TUNED..

Keep it simple for a simple mind , ME !
A XF Falcon wiper motor seems to fit his idea OK . The Pulse W modulated DC motor boards are cheap as on EPAY Reversible 12-24V 5A Motor Speed Control PWM Controller | eBay ...MIKE

I remember seeing one not so long ago with a home made clutch set up like your talking about. The only trouble is, I don't know where I saw it.
Will look forward to your up dates.

Stuart I just went to get a bit more done it is a bit faster than that, I have no idea where I came-up with (or dreamt) up that figure. {note} I will set it up tomorrow and get acc figures
OK....Here are some pic's that I promised...
Pic #1 and #2
Dog clutch on the mill table.
Pic #3
The actual spit motor
Pic #4
The split drive dog from the motor
Pic #5 and #6
This is a nolathain?? spelling?? collet/sliding clutch I turned up quickely today..
The idea is that the dog clutch end that I have colored in will slide over the dog on the table while sliding inside the split dog on the motor...
All in all pretty simple really..................................
Pic #6 showes the collet/sliding clutch on in reverse just to show the idea...
In tomorrows post....(or tonights if the kids go to bed early) I will get stuck into the bracket
set-up I am going to build...
fieww I'm all worn out...

Re: Dog Clutch
That might be me Dave, as I made one for my Mill ( HM-45) about 2 years ago. Works a treat. I think I have pics somewhere, if anyone wants to see them.....

Matt
Thats the mental exhaustion from working it all out. You don't think it takes it out of you, but it does.

Why not post them up, if it doesn't help Matt it might help others and I am always up for a few photo's

Thanks for posting the link, I do remember it now, but it's not the one I was thinking of. The one I remember was on the X axis like yours, but a smaller mill, I will try to find it again since I am doing nothing at the moment.
