A social media post of a close call. Some good reading in the comments as well.

Well, that's what can happen when you don't install the riving knife.

He has no guard and no riving knife. I have no sympathy.

Far too regularly I hear a loud “BANG” come from one of the machines at my guild where a member has either taken a shortcut, done something new/different without consultation as to its suitability or simply decided to ignore instructions. I also get to spend a considerable amount of my time fixing the damage done to the machine(s). An unfortunately too-common reason behind these events is because they “saw it on Youtube”.

    Thanks for this Rob.

I’m not an expert on table saws,
But was that not a Slider,

If it was, why not set up something on the slider too make it all as safe as possible??

    Cheers Matt.

Probably his best outcome. Next trick would have been to reach over the unprotected blade to pick up the piece of timber.

Wake -up call about a casual approach to workshop machinery for sure obviously lacking in safety training as far as he is concerned.

    Yes, definitely a possibility!

I cringe when I open these links, wondering, well expecting something dumb. The only solace when it says "close call" probably means no blood or gory stuff.

I think it's worth mentioning that - good on the guy for posting it for all to see. It was probably embarrassing and a chastening experience. I can't see that the guy was posting asking for sympathy, but rather publicising a danger as a lesson to others which is very effective.

I'm not saying we shouldn't criticise harshly but, making a lesson out of it is not a bad step.
