    Default Half face respirator - why did I wait so long?

    Just a safety share / public service announcement from me.

    I bought a half face respirator today with organic chemical filter. (P2 + A1). I'd been making do by having open doors and windows, and had been thinking about one of those 3M forced air respirators (maybe one day). However, I saw the price of these (<$50!) so thought I'd give it a go.

    The half face respirator works so well even though I have a beard, which was a no-no when I was in certain industrial facilities. The seal is very good - when I cover up the intake with my hands, I can't breathe any air in! Even if I am getting any exposure to the contaminants between the seal and my face, it must be minimal. I suspect with a really big beard these might not seal as well.

    I used the mask while working with some epoxy - couldn't even smell it! Took the respirator off when done and the smell was strong. Very impressed how well these work.
    Didn't seem as effective with methylated spirits, maybe because the molecules are smaller.

    It will be interesting to see how long the filters last, but to my mind they are worth the money regardless. Didn't know what I was missing!!
    Wasn't too uncomfortable for about an hour's use, and I'd rather the discomfort compared to breathing the nasties in.

    Definitely recommend these and wish I'd bought one a lot sooner!

    Wasn't wanting to endorse a particular product - search for half face respirator and you'll find plenty of options.

    I got a Prochoice one from total tools but I'm guessing any will be fine if it meets the Australian standard.

    Thanks. Replacement gas/vapour cartridges are cheap too at $17 a pair.

    Same thing,

    Having moved the TS into the shed from under the verandah the dust was terrible, as well as from thicknessing boards with a router even with the double doors open. I got a couple of the prochoice A1P2 types and the difference in smell and breathing was brilliant.

    Not the best solution but it will do until I get a good dust collector.

    I agree with this.
    Also with the organic chemical filter make sure you keep the filters in an air tight container when not in use. For instance the Sundstrom ones are meant to last about 40 hours (depending on variables) once opened from the vacuum sealed packaging, but the hours stop counting down when they are put back in an airtight situation. It is well worth doing considering the price of the filters.
