    Default Sore Snoze

    I had a Jarrah Burl Bowl explode on me today. I had soaked in some Organoil Hard Burning Oil, went and had lunch etc.

    I put the bowl back on the lathe, checked that it rotated freely as all I was going to do was to burnish in the remaining oil. Started the lathe on the 4th speed stage 500 - 2900rpm and slowly turned the dial, checking for any vibration or out of the ordinary sounds, when "BANG" I copped some shrapnel in the face, specifically the bridge of my nose, just under the safety glasses.

    No tool, toolrests or anything else was near the burl.

    Probable causes: Spinning to fast, Internal stress, Loss of strength or because it had enough of me

    MBGitW just happens to be an old school EEN and after me saying no to the standard list of questions for head injuries, stuck me together with Steri Strips.

    I am to wear a FaceShield at all times when turning now

    Ouch, hope you're okay. You've made me think about using a full face shield now, just come out from the shed after turning some Jarrah burl as well

    I always wear a full face shield. Payed for itself the day I cut into a witchetty grub. A huge splatter all over the shield instead of my face

    Hmm, looks like the burl wasn't stable enough as it seems as though it's broken through the faults. Do you think you've also gone a bit thin on thickness?

    Scott, the walls were about 6-8mm thick. Upon reflection, it may be a combination of wall thickness, heat stress from burnishing, speed and unstable material. I have turned Burls thinner and they have remained stable . . . I just relised that this is the second accident I have had on the Yellow Peril in a month . . . I wonder what no 3 will be

    Pat, sorry to hear of your mishap. Yes, I always use a full face shield and have never felt good about just safety glasses. I have one you can borrow and try if you want.

    Chris I have 3 full face shields and had been wearing one prior, when roughing out the guts. Now I am to wear a faceshield everytime I turn the lathe on, as per MBGitW or she'll take the key to the shed off me

    Yes I can make jokes about it now and I realise that the result could have been much worse - eye injury, being knocked unconscious, fracture snoze, uncontrolled hemorrhage etc

    Hopefully no number 3 Pat, touch wood (pun intended).

    I've always thought Jarrah burl to be a little flakey and prone to stress cracks.

    This the behemoth I worked on and finished today (1.8kg and 415mm diameter):

    Poor burl good to see none of mans best friends injured either in this disaster




    Pat I gather lso you were using the Longworth chuck in compression? I assume in over tightening it it has put forces on the weakest/brittle section
